No DPFE sensor???

So ive had a P0401 light on for a while now and im finally getting around to checking it out. From the posts ive read most seem that the first thing to do is clean the passage into the throttle body...then move on to the other possible reasons for EGR insufficient flow...like the DPFE sensor.

BUT

Upon taking the engine cover off i see that the DPFE sensor is not even there. So my question is...DO I NEED IT? I have an 02 4.6l screw, was there any reason that it wouldnt come with it, or anything? I havent done anything more than change the oil on it since i bought it 1yr ago. It has under 50k miles on it.

Any Input is Appreciated

R side of the intake. Do you see a loose 3-pin connector & 2 hoses (or 2 open nipples) leaking exhaust from the EGR pipe?

Yes, there's a good chance, could be the EGR valve itself or dirty throttle body elbow ports (EGR ports). The two hoses for the DPFE are circled in yellow -

PO401 -

DPFE -

DPFE = ^^^^ - Yours is most likely black plastic. Just follow the two lines circled in yellow above to locate.

Locate your parts above first,- for a better understanding.

That's right, you have an "02", -those are different. That's the only year that had these DPFE sensors -

Cleaning the throttle body is in the "How To" forum on this site. Here ~

There are no vacuum hoses on the DPFE - just exhaust hoses from the EGR pipe. Vacuum comes from the intake manifold exclusively.
