This is what I was looking for earlier. You have a fully integrated EGR,EVR and DPFE, which is cool btw.

You can see how it's put together here -

_________

Just wanted this in the thread since it's the newer style set up. I haven't had one apart yet personally.

Still stands, check those ports in the plenum as directed earlier.

Went to the stealership today to get that gasket and they asked why I needed one as they had not sold one in a long time. I explained the problem and 1 of the guys went & asked service who immediately said it was that sensor. So what do I do?They did not have either part but had sold a sensor more recently. Do I waste a lot of time doing the plenum or spend $116 on a new sensor which they think is more likely the cause? Another issue is finding someone to help me do the work to keep cost down etc. Ideas please.

You can buy a whole EGR valve assembly with the DPFE for less than that - the dealer is raping you.

I would definitely check the plenum ports (the elbow first). If you purchase a new sensor, IMO, it won't make a difference. You have the PO401. That's what you get with clogged passages. Yes, the old DPFE set ups, it could be a faulty DPFE. You have the new set up, which looks much better than the old, - I doubt that's the problem.

What else was I going to post ? Oh, I know I've said this before, but the 4.6L's are known for clogging those ports and receiving THAT DTC when doing so.

I replace that gasket every once in awhile and NEVER have a problem getting one. I use Rock Auto for that.

Just sayin, check those ports in the plenum first... You probably won't need a new sensor/egr set.

It looks to me like just the DPFE is replaceable without having to buy the whole assembly.

So if I am reading this right u are still saying that a build up of carbon etc is the most likely cause in yr opinions? The gasket is over 7 bucks at the stealership & just over 3 at Auto Value so thats a diifficult choice!!!! Is there a good source just for the DPFE without being ripped off in case I need one?

Yes, as it's been said repeatedly. And no, not that I'm aware of. Just fix the damn thing.

Ok well I have a new gasket for $4.23 including tax which is a hell of a lot better than the stealership wanted. The guy asked me why I wanted one so I told him (a shortened version) of the story, Advance can get (if needed) a comeplete unit (egr) for about $80, it will take a few days to get but if the cleaning does not work I think that will be the next plan of attack. Better to change the whole damm thing & eliminate that than having to pull it apart again at a later date. I know thats looking on the negative side but this is really pi----g me off. Why the hell could we not get a defined problem makes it so much harder to fix. I guess it keeps everyone going to stealerships (or not) but its pretty crappy when u make vehicles so damm complicated that u need to be Bill Gates just to open the damm hood!!! I remember a time (omg it makes me feel so old) when bumpers where chrome (not plastic) & dads spent sundays messing with there rides. All of this "progress" to some degree is pricing themselves out because people cannot afford the repairs nowadays, so they are shooting themselves in the foot IMHO.
I would also like to explain somethings to u, some of which u may not know but hopefully might explain my "attitude" (for want of another way of putting it) amongst other things. Some of u may already know I am NOT an American (not at least by birth), I came here a number of years ago but I have dual citizenship now. I don't have a garage, my engine knowledge is limited to 2 stroke motorcycles & thats going back a few years. My health works against me, since coming to the U.S I have developed several medical problems which can badly affect my day to day living, some of these are progressive. Other than work & my immediate family I speak to no-one. I don't socialise with anyone, I don't go to any bars or clubs etc. My life revolves around my wife & my dogs. We love going to the movies & occasionally some concerts but thats about it. Because of this it makes tasks like this on my truck difficult as there are very few people that I can ask for help from & very often they work o/t when I am off. All I ask is that u can bear these things in mind when I am perhaps "trying yr patience somewhat". Thanks guys.

I understand. The cleaning part of it is real easy. If can take apart a two stroke and put it back together, then you can do this. You now know what to look for and a plan, it's all in this thread. You have diagrams to go with, what more could you ask for ?

Between cleaning the plenum and replacing the part, be happy to know, you will take care of the problem.

Remember, disconnect the battery before you begin.
