If there had been water in the fuel, it would not necessarily go away as it could clog the fuel filter, but I agree, it should show the problem hot or cold.

Nope. I explained how that works in post #11. That one must have slipped by yuh.

LATEST UPDATE FROM DEALERSHIP:

just talked to ford, supposedly, the backfiring was caused by a spark plug that had a "hairline crack" and that they replaced all 8 of the spark plugs yet they are not covered under any kind of warranty. However, when they replaced a coil pack about a month ago, they also replaced the spark plug which WAS covered under warranty...... im confused! They are going to do a test drive after it sits all night to see if the backfiring is still there.

To me, if it was a spark plug that had a hairline crack, it would do it warm and cold, but what do I know? Im just the customer.

according to the advisor, they called ford again on it and "FORD" says that they have heard of it before and was similar to the symptoms I was having. Now they also supposedly talked to ford the last time and was told it was the MAF sensor which turned out NOT to be the problem yet they charged me for it. Granted, it was only a $100 deductible but still, it was something that was not the problem.

Yea, that's a crack in the porcelain. Just know that it's not going to fire right. This can react different to temperature from heat range compromise. I guess I could explain it a little. This being part of the Misfire Algorithm Processing. It's all software, the Misfire Monitor runs continuously, calculating misfires every 200 and 1000 engine revolutions. Either they can monitor in realtime or draw from memory, = mode 6 cylinder history. They most likely graphed all eight. That cylinder with the cracked plug, stuck out like a sore thumb. More or less.

So how did the plug crack ? Either it got by QC at the manufacturer or it happened during the install.

If I remember correctly, the original plug that they replaced was the pass.side, second one back from the front. They said that the bad cyl was #5.

how are the cylinders numbered? Is the second cyl back from the front of the engine on the pass side, cyl 5? If so, I think I have a good reason to argue with them.

No. Passenger side is 1,2,3,4 fan to firewall and driver's side is 5,6,7,8.
