Talking Fast and the furious...

OK guys, I know I'm real late about seeing this movie but I'm glad I finally did...even though the lightning didn't see any action other than hauling parts!

Here's my question...I realize that the imports in this movie were on the EXTREME side of modified, but I wanted to ask those of you who have moderately modified your trucks (or have lightnings), how do you think you would compete against a moderately souped up import? I realize that our trucks are much heavier, and aren't made to race, but I was just curious...

I've always tried to tell myself that my truck doesn't need to go fast, it's made to haul dirt bikes, and if I have the need for speed I can just pull out my Yamaha R1, but just like you guys I want the best of both worlds!

Any imput would be greatly appriciated!

Chris

$$$$$

You can make your truck go quite a bit faster than it does from the factory - just look at the Lightning. It is all a matter of how much you want to spend... Anything less than a supercharger and you are talking about VERY small increments in performance. You might do ok against some lightly modified Hondas in a straight line, but don't try to keep up in the corners unless you have done a bunch of suspension work... See what I mean about the $$$$$!

Okay I don't want to **** anyone off but here is my OPINION on the subject of fast little rice cars. IN MOST CASES, THEY ARENT VERY FAST!

I have raced literally dozens of accords, acuras, civics, and other modded up little cars and so far only one little civic with a supercharger has whipped me. I even beat a newer Maxima 6cyl. I have a 4x4 SuperCab for crying out loud! Now a slolam course might be a different story but between stop lights they are pretty slow. I'm not saying they can't be made to go fast, but I'm saying near stock import cars are not very impressive. They get good mileage alright, but I can guarantee that an 11sec civic will get about the same mileage as an 11sec mustang, ie terrible!

This guy at work was talking up his subaru WRX like it was the very fastest and bestest car ever, and it beats my truck alright but not by much. HOWEVER, my wife's mustang GT shamed him so badly that he took it to the dealer to check if something was wrong with the motor! I had him by 2 car lengths by 50mph and her car is bone stock! LOL!

I'd like to say that about %90 of all imports aren't fast at all. They have about 150 horse power at high revs, and around that much torque. Thats not too much to drive anything other than a motorcycle, let alot a 4 door economy car. The F150 gets 345 pounds of torque at a mere 2300 RPM: . Thats much much more than any import, and most import mods are purley for looks. You'll manage quite well with the V8!:cool

Inports VS American Iron

True the laws of physics apply to everybody and rear wheel drive (or all wheel drive) will bet front wheel drive evertime under every cirmustance. The only import I saw in that movie (and let me say, its a GREAT movie, loopy plot but what the hell were you expecting?) that was rear wheel drive was that Supra at the end and of course that AWSOME blown hemi Charger they rolled. Those little FWD cars can be tricked up pretty nice but as long as they remain FWD they SUCK. That's why Honda's REAL street racer is the NSX which is a Accord turned around backwards which makes it mid engined REAR wheel drive and kicks serious ***.

Too bad they had to ruin the only decent car (except the Lightning of course) in the movie. Sure some of those rice burners may be fast but much of that movie was all hype. You cant tell me that car would stay anywhere close to the blown Charger in a 1/4 mile. Plus they sound like a f'in POS whoopie cushion. They call them the new hot rods...they arent and never will be a hot rod. Should've raced the L instead.

Cool

You should see all the little Piece Of S%^$ rice burners out at Sears Point on Wednesday nights, It is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. The all look and sound the same to me with their 4 inch exhaust tip. Too bad it 1 and a quarter all the way back to the tip.

WHAT??! What law of physics are you referring to? Don't get me wrong here, I'm not defending the "fart-canmobiles", but I'm defending the front wheel drive cars.
Ask the stock 99 Mustang GT (with it's "awe" inspiring 260HP)...or the stock 99 BMW 325i...or the stock 2000 Mercedes SLK230...how the heck did a front-wheel drive Chrysler 300M spanked their rear wheel drive butts?
These were true races on controlled race course. I have been tech inspected to the 'Nth degree because of protests...and found to be within "stock" (I am given allowance for the K&N and Borla...big deal).

Given that, I simply cannot stand those little rice burnin' fart-can mobiles...but I give respect to 2 of them: TTurbo Supra and TTurbo RX7.
The Hondas, Nissans, VWs, Saturns...whatever, mean nothing more than road hazards to me.

yeah I know what you mean MX, but considering you're R1 will neuter anything in that movie, I wouldnt worry about it! Trust me, I had an R6, and a buddy of mine that I used to work with has a 550hp RX-7. He wasnt happy when we got to the next light.

I deal with a lot of these "euro" shops where they do these mods on these imports, and some of these thing will flat fly. It seems like most of them are set up for 1/8 mile though. I had a friendly run with a buddy of mine with a Honda and his feeling were hurt by the time we went from point A to point B. They look really good, but most of the ones around my area are all show and no go, unless they throw fi****ls of money at it. I wish we could get parts for our trucks as easily as these guys can for their cars though....and as cheap too.

Question

I wanna know why they feel the need to have wings on their cars? Cause I have seen some rediculous wings out there! Next question: arent wings used for downforce? Doesnt make sense to me cause they are front wheel drive, why would they want that?

I know first hand about these "rice rockets". My wife drives a '95 delSol VTEC with 160 hp - totally stock. Now, I have never taken it to the strip before, but I know it will keep up with a lot of V8's out there on the road. The damn thing red-lines at 8200RPMs!!! Had a Dodge Ram pull up beside me the other night, and after the front tires quit squealin' and that little car launched, I never saw that truck again (of course it was a Dodge ). I still think you can't go wrong with a strong V8. Not to mention I would much rather be in a wreck with my SCrew than that little pocket car.

I guess the imports are so popular because it is hard to drive a big vehicle when you are leaned over so far out the window or laying in the back seat trying to drive (Gangsta Lean!!!)
