Question EGR Valve

My 4.6 l '97 F-150 will not idle. It runs fine as long as you manually keep it reved up. I've about decided the EGR valve must be bad (?). How do you test the valve?
Thanks

I had an EGR valve go bad and the truck was not even driveable. You might want to check the Idle Air control valve as well.

Cool

The EGR system on your 4.6L truck is called a DPFE system. The valve is a simple vacuum actuated valve. When no vacuum is applied, a spring inside the valve forces it to close, and when vacuum is applied it opens. If you follow the vaccum line from the valve, it will lead your back to a the EVR. This is a solenoid that the ECM uses to change the vacuum level being applied to the EGR valve. A simple way to test the valve for basic function is to disconnect & plug the vaccum hose from the top of the EGR valve. Then attach a seperate hose to the EGR valve. Now you can manually test the valve to see if it opens and closes by applying vacuum from a hand pump. If you think you need to test leakage thru the valve when closed, you'll have to remove it from the engine. Don't forget, the EGR system is covered under the Emissions warranty, not the 36/36000 bumper to bumper.

The way I understand my warranty book, unless the vehicle was certified for sale in CA most of the emmisions systems components (including EGR valve)are only covered 3/36,000. I hope you know something I don't!
Thanks
