Question tach help

Ok guys, need some help...I bought a
fairly strippy shortbox V6 4x4 5 spd.
Here's the question...
The truck has everything I wan except
a tachometer, I've bought a decent
looking one but can't find the "tach"
trigger on the ignition system. Does
anyone know where it is? Is there a
tach wire sitting somewhere under the
dash for the full guage package????
I know that it's easy to find on
Mustang 5.0's etc.
HELP!!!

Do a search for "tach" in the message boards. From what I hear it is easier to buy a new instrument cluster with tach. from Ford and install it. The tach should work with no worries. I may be wrong.

Agreed buy one from Ford.
Simple plug in installation.
Also when you sell it will improve resale value.
An aftermarket one would probably decrease resale value.

Thanks for the "search" idea...found it in old aftermarket. Resale...whatever...
by the way installed wth no holes drilled...I'll remove it if I have to.
I'll spend the extra $200 I didn't have to spend on a new cluster somewhere else.

I've got a 4.2L XL and put a tach in it very easily. You don't need a new instrument cluster. Here's what I posted in 'Other Aftermarket':

I found the following in a past post. I followed the directions and it worked.
>snip
The Helm manual does have the info and it's more than a bit expensive. I'll save you the time and money:
The electrical manual shows a pin-48 from the PCM labeled "Tachometer". It's on a 104-pin connector and is identified as "W/PK" which is probably white/pink. This wire then goes to pin 9 on a 40-pin connector on the firewall to the right (when looking at the engine-compartment side of the firewall from the front of the truck) of the power-brake assembly. There are three connectors there, C158 is the top one. On the inside of the cab (up under the dash somewhere) this white/pink wire goes to pin 12 on the instrument cluster. This wire from the C158 connector to the instrument cluster should be the one to connect to. Of course, you also need to connect power and ground to the tach.
