I beleive it's a 4.9L, 300C.I. I've known a few people that have had them and they have never had a bad thing to say about them. I don't know of any mileage records, but I know they are virtually bulletpfoof. At least the older ones are.

It is a 4.9 inline six (300 CI). It is a great engine and very torquey for an inline six. It is the same engine that Fed-Ex used to run in their Ford delivery vans to well over 200K miles. It is also used for tree chippers that tree companies use. It is a good engine, one of Fords best ever.

A story on how tough the old 300 is:
I had an '80 4x4 w/300 and 4-speed manual (granny gear)- what a truck! Anyway, coming home from college one Friday, I lost power going up a hill. Had the pedal to the floor and was still losing speed. Once up and over the hill, I pulled into a store and called my dad to come follow me home to make sure I could get there. I was still about 30 miles away.
Once home (yes, I drove the truck), we popped the head and found two cracked cylinder walls and a third piston was trash. The last 30 miles, it ran on 3 cylinders! And if that's not enough, the truck was driven another 22 miles to the engine shop for a new short-block.
Yup, the 300 is probably the best engine ever used by Ford.

I knew a kid who tried to kill one by draining the oil and beating it to death. He did this because his dad told him if it blew up or quit running, he would drop in a V-8. After about a month or so, he filled it back up with oil and drove it for a few more years before he sold it. He never got his V-8.

I know of a guy who has over 500,000 miles on one. Changes his oil every 3,000 miles. It has never even had the valve covers off and he does not even use synthetic oil. My dad traded his 87 with the 300 for a 302 v8. He had 240,000 miles on it when he traded about a year and a half ago.(The transmission went out in it and he put a 100 dollar one in, and well he paid for what he got, so decided he would just go trade it in. He never washed or waxed it so the paint was dull and it was beat up from dear hitting it and going through the woods. He does get better gas mileage with his 302 v8 than he did with the I-6 though.

My '94 4.9 has 82k. The only thing wrong is a lose rocker or something because it ticks. The 300 was introduced in '65. It has seven main caps. Early models did not have pushrod guides. Very long pushrods. Rpm's are limited to around 3200. My experience is that passing power with a/c on is very limited. I have the Mazda 5speed 0 to 40 it will go.
With a 31 year run the 300 was a legend. The new 4.2 needs to die to make room for a sohc inline 6.
Chevy will have their new inline in 2001. Ford will have the pos 4.2 till at least 2003.

kld28: We bought a 1988 Bronco (full size) 4wd in 1988 and it had the 300 inch six and a five speed. We could get 21 mpg @ 60-65 mph on a regular basis, and had seen 24 mpg on occasion. Torque out the butt down low, made the whole package ideal for us. We sold it a few years later and it is still running around town, just beat to crud w/o any weird sounds or smoke blow. Wish we still had it.....j.b.

I have an E.B. '95 F-150 with a 4.9 (300 ci) I6 for my work truck, and I must say that I am absolutely blown away by it. I added a K&N kit to it and that made a big difference, but even without it, it still is very responsive. The K&N gave me a 4000 rpm + redline. I am a mechanic, and when I bought the truck, I had to ask around about the motor because I haven't had that much experience with them. I now believe that the reason I haven't worked much on them is because they are such tough motors.
Take care,
-Chris

Between my dad and I we have had 8 300 6cyl between us since 1980. I love that engine more than any other thyat ford has made. Thats probably why I never bought a V8. I wish they would have kept it instead of going to this rinky dink 4.2. It isn't even comparible. My favorite truck that I have had was my '94 XLT w/4.9 and 5-speed......loved that truck.

My buddy and his family have owned several of the 4.9 liter I6 engines, and they are great despite the old technology. It is extremely reliable and torquey. Only down side is it will not rev at all, but for most truck uses, that's not a problem.

Another interesting note on the 4.9L (300ci):
Last year at the NHRA finals in Pomona, I saw a "vehicle" with a 4.9L in it do an 8 second quarter mile. I guess anything is possible.
Take care,
