2004 F-150 5.4 Misfire, Shutter at load, high rpm - COPs replaced
Good afternoon-
I have a 2004 F-150 with 162k miles on it with the spark plugs last replaced by Ford at 110k (7 of 8 broke off in the motor, fun fun). At any rate I began to notice a feeling like running over bumps in the road at the beginning of November but never got a misfire or check engine light. This would occur about 65mph when the truck would be in overdrive and usually going up an incline. This got progressively worse until I was able to get a misfire code on cyl #2. I purchased a new plug and a set of COPs online. I replaced the COP and plug on #2. After testing I had the problem come back up- mostly when I'd floor the truck- and got another misfire code and headed to get it read. This time it was cyl #6. I went ahead and replaced all the COPs and took it out to test again. It ran OK around town at 35-45mph but as soon as I would jump on the interstate and gun it the truck starts bucking and misfiring and I'd hear popping from the motor so I'd let off the gas. Then after doing that getting up past 2500rpm would cause it to start jumping and missing. Once I get it going (from flooring it) it typically continues to misfire badly sometimes causing me to only be able to go about 45 on the interstate. Leaving it overnight or for 24hrs and I can crank and drive it again as long as I don't floor it. The last time this happened I took it and got the codes--- they were as follows:
B1230
C1484
P0300
P0301
P0302
P0304
P0316
P0356
I've also replaced the fuel filter, run injector cleaner through and several tanks of premium with no change although it did seem to do better with premium vs regular. I also unbolted by cat at the collector in case the cat on the passenger side was getting blocked but that didn't help in my tests. I took it to a repair person here in town and they 'couldn't find anything wrong with it.'
Any thoughts? It's driving me nuts. I can replace all the plugs too but I think it may be something more.

Thanks. No, I haven't ever cleaned the throttle body - really only work done is fluids, spark plugs, and filters (air, fuel, oil)

With those DTC's, I'd say a stuck EGR valve, bad coil to boot mount, coil connectors, PCM coil drivers or junk coils. Possibly cracked plugs. If not installed properly, could cause Porcelain (spelling?) seal compromise or fracture (crack).
Other than that, take it to the dealership for PROPER diagnostics. Take your post with you as it could assist with locating the problem (you never know).
One of the very first things they will eliminate, or the first,- is a fuel delivery issue. Then go from there.
After it's fixed, gift that first cough cough mechanic with a couple free ballet lessons. Most people are gifted somewhere... -That should be ballpark for that fruitcake.

Thanks for the feedback on this - it's been driving me crazy. I picked up the TB and MAF cleaner tonight along with the plugs and will get started on it tomorrow evening to eliminate those. I'll also check the EGR. I plan on taking it to the Ford dealer after I do those things if it's still giving me trouble and let them run a full diag. I'll post an update on any progress tomorrow- this getting dark early thing makes it harder to get work done outside on it

I hate I never updated this back in the day. So the problem ended up being clogged CATs as well as a bad COP. I replaced all the COPS and when the CATs were pulled they literally fell apart as the front CATs had broken up and blown back into the back ones clogging them. After everything was replaced I was back in business.
