LOW EMISSION TRUCKS & SUVS

LOW EMISSION TRUCKS & SUVS
I'm sure everyone is in favor of "low emmissions" - especially when it comes to exhaust gases
What everyone may be unaware of is the "cost" of these lower emissions. The media is quick to point out that it'll only cost the manufacturer about $100 more per vehicle (I guess that will show up as "$170 California Emissions Package" by the time it gets to the consumer )
What nobody is saying is that EVERY GALLON OF GASOLINE WILL COST $.25-30 MORE because Clinton just proposed that the entire nation switch to California Low Sulphur Emission standards. Our gasoline costs $1.479 per gallon today in San Diego because of "low sulphur" fuels. How much less is yours?
Good Luck - you'll be paying for Clinton long after he's gone...

I notice Clinton made his announcement at a school because it is "for the children". If he really wants to save children, he would give every family that owns an economy car a new Excursion! I bet it would save more lives per $ spent than the new gas plan.
I remember an editorial in Car & Driver a few years ago. The upshot was that for what the electric cars cost, you could give everyone with a pre 1970 vehicle a new Cadillac! It would cost less and reduce emissions more.
Remember, Al "Earth in the Balance" Gore is on record saying he wants to ban the internal combustion engine by 2015!

Clinton... an impeached "lame duck" president in search of a legacy! Reduced emissions by up to 95%... get real! If Bill Clinton and Al Gore had their way the Triton and Power Stroke Diesel would become the "Tulip" and the "Panzy Stroke Diesel".
I own a 77 Bronco with all the emissions stuff that they came with back then, 14 mpg and 135 HP...gutless (thank you Federal Government)!
Society has become aware enough of enviromental concerns that the Federal Government no longer needs to be ramming this down our throats.
Does anyone here continue to believe a SINGLE WORD that comes out of the mouth of Bill Clinton or Al Gore?
You are right that Al gore wants to get rid of the internal combustion engine... what a fruitcake! It's a good thing that Air Force 2 is not powered by an internal combusion engine. I guess if us peasants can't afford to be shuttled everywhere in a 747 or Lear Jet we're out of luck! It's a good thing we have rulers like them to look out for us...

54RegCab - Fortunately for all of us, the Federal Govt. does not yet control our education system. Currently, the states pay for our schools. BTW, money for our schools is not the problem - we spend more per student than almost all the other countries, yet they out perform us in the tests. Essentiallly, as far as our schools go, we are paying for a Rolls Royce and getting a Yugo.
I laugh when I see some political shill up there complaining that the Fed. Govt. spends way more on the military than the schools. Of course they do, since the Feds don't fund the schools! However, for the State of California, 54% of the state budget is for education.
I wonder if those Suburbans Gore & Clinton ride around in comply with the low emissions standards.

As a matter of fact, I just had to have my '99 F150 emissions tested here in Connecticut. They don't test new vehicles till they're 1 year old so this is the first time it went in(still had to pay $20 for the sticker even tho they didn't test anything!). CT just started this new emissions process where one of their ace employees drives your car onto a set of rollers so that the drive wheels are on the rollers. Then they get it up to highway speed I believe which is 65mph here. After that they monitor the exhaust for 3 minutes (entire test took 15 minutes). Surprisingly, the F-150 did great! It has the 5.4 L engine too. Here are the results:
HC content in parts per million:
MAX allowed: 126.0 F-150: 0.4
CO content in %
MAX allowed: 1.38% F-150: 0.0%
NO content in parts per million:
MAX allowed: 1106.0 F-150: 30.3
Seems pretty good to me!
If I remember reading correctly, these standards in CT are among the toughest in the country - I know we have to have the California emissions package on all the vehicles sold too.

Petrone - Glad to hear about the low emissions on that 5.4. I was already pretty sure that any SUV or truck drivetrain that was approved for use in a passenger car (such as Ford's 4.6 is) would be OK on emissions, but I wasn't too sure about the 5.4.
Essentially, most SUVs and trucks already comply with the car pollution requirements and don't fall into the loop hole that allows them to pollute more. The question is why don't the anti-SUV/PU folks ever mention this? Shouldn't the manufacturers be getting a gold star for polluting so much less than they are legally allowed?
Instead, the green's prefer to say that we are polluting 3-5 times as much as cars. I guess it suits their purposes to demonize us and our vehicles so that the public will support future taxes and or bans. The same tactics of demonization are being perfected against dirt bikes, ATVs, snowmobiles, jet skis, etc...

Dave you are correct about the more $$ per student thing but the public schools in SC do get federal funding suppliments.
What really sucks is that if you send your child to private school you still have to pay for those overpriced public schools taxes!
The public school system here in SC is purely pathetic.
I think it's last or next to last in the country.
We sooo need discipline in our schools down here.
That's what they have in other countries that we don't have in our schools.

All major auto makers have some type of project going. These are 0 emissions vehicles. Once they get this perfected say good by to internal combustion engine.
