Honda engines
Hey guys - I read on one of the news web pages - go.com I think. Anyway the news article told about GM in a partnership with Honda so GM will has begin purching Honda V-6 engines with transmissions. These are to be put into new GM brand autos.
Also several years ago in "Popular Science" magazine they reported that GM had made a deal with Toyota to purchase V-8 engines from Toyota to put into the GM brand pickups.
So what part of GM or Chevy is American made?

bsmith: I think that you will find that Honda has "assembly" plants in the US. The various componet parts are shipped in from Mexico, Brazil and Japan and assembled in the US, then they sell the assembled auto or ship them out to various countries. I dont think you can find any company manufacturing Honda engines in the US. If you can find one I would sure like to know about it.
Also, GM is importing Toyota V-8 engines used in pickup trucks.

I was talking to an engineer at Honda and he told me that they were making engines in Detroit. I'm a Honda tech and i can tell you that Honda is using a lot of USA built parts.
The only parts I have seen from Mexico are the wire harness and the wire harness on my Ford was made in Mexico also. I'm going to try and find out just how many of the parts on the Hondas are made in the USA and I'll let you Know.

bsmith: Good to know the facts. I was informed that these were imported and assembled here. Let me know what going on.
Also, the news article indicated that the engines and transmissions were being imported from Japan to GM. But I only know what I read.

We really should get off the pot with this Jap-crap business. It's an international world, folks. Crown Vics and Grand Marquis aren't even American. Every one of them is built in Oakville, Ontario, by us Canucks. Every Camaro and Firebird is build in Quebec.
Those Honda pick-ups and minivans are built by US and Cdn folks just like most, but not all, of us on this site. I just don't like the products. Nothing to do with the company's history of origin.
I was reading in this month's Car and Driver that the gorgeous, fast, new Jaguar XKR has the exact same supercharger from our beloved Ford SVT Lightning pickup. Is there a problem with that?
It also has a German transmission and Italian tires. So what.
My so-called "Mazda" transmission (say it with a snear now) works just fine, thank you, as did my last one. And Mazdas are built in the USA by Americans. They're part of Ford!
I disregard any condescending comments about country of origin. Do the products work and feel right? Do I like them? Those are my concerns.

Black 2000 SC XLT short-box. 4.2 V-6, 5-speed, 3.55 Limited Slip. Side steps, CD, remote entry, FORD box liner. Add-ons: Older Windstar driver's side wiper blade (with the air scoop, because I don't slow down when it rains), back-up beeper, "f150online.com" sticker and snazzy Tweetie Bird floor mats.
My third F-series: '73 F-100, '98 F-150 and '00 F-150. Great trucks!

Shifter - When I started this message I didn't mean to imply that Honda engines were not good quality. I was only making a statement that GM is now using Honda engine and transmission V-6 in new autos. And that they also use Toyota V-8 engine for pickups.
I have owned and driven Japanese made vehicles and found that the quality was very good. Just too small. I like the full size F-150 better. And the quality of my F-150 is as good or better than any of the foreign made vehicles were.
