Engine Kind of Blah

so what do you guys think will the k&n help at all. I really don't want to get the chip because at 25-30.00 a fill up really can't afford the super gas...

Just installed an Airaid FPIK. Very noticable improvement. Still hesitates to upshift when you punch it, but a noticable increase in power and drivability. I'd recommend it!

The Superchip helped my truck out, also the modification I made to the K&N filter helped on the highway. I posted a pic of the mod on my web page.

F150Sport: I'll tell you about my last truck: it was a 97 4.6 5speed SC 4x4. First I added a K&N air filter (just the filter) I noticed no improvement. Next came a Flowmaster cat-back (40 series 2 chamber) I did notice a little added response. Of course it could have also been me just getting into the throttle to hear the pipes. Then I added the superchip. Night and day effect this time!! I could most diffenetely tell that the beast had some more pick-up to it. Soon after that I changed the spark plugs. The engine seemed to run smoother was the only thing I noticed with them. Yes, I'd rather not have to buy premium gas but if that was what I had to pay to have the beast run better, then so be it.

F150Sport,
As you can see from my signature, my truck is very similar to yours. Like Tina, I added the K&N first, and didn't see much difference, then I added the WMS Velocity Tube, and noticed a big difference, especially where your seeing your sluggishness! I also saw in increase in MPG on trips (not much around town though) and a very noticable decrease in the need for the transmission to down shift while asending inclines on the highway. It still downshifts when I step on it to pass, but I find I don't have to floor it any more, and I don't notice the hesitation! The Velocity Tube was about $100 with shipping, and was relatively easy to install. Search the engine posts and you'll find my account as well as a couple others here who have installed it. So far, it's been the best money I've invested in my truck!
My latest mod was a Gibson Side Swept cat-back exhaust system that I was lucky enough to pick up from a fellow F150Onliner at an excellent price! The increase with the exaust has been minimal, but it sure sounds better! Not to loud, but much more gutsy!
I've been wanting a super chip as well, but like you have hesitated due to the requirement of using premium fuel! Mike (Super Chip Man) told me about the flip chip, and I've e-mailed him for more info. I think it's just a normal super chip with a switch that allows you to turn it on and off, but I'll know all the details after I hear back from Mike!
Good luck on your future mods, and to answer your original question, I think the K&N filter was a worth while investment just because I normally change air filters every other oil change, and at $20.00 a peice, the K&N has already paid for itself in my case!

Engine Kind of Blah
I've noticed that I have a general sluggishness in my engine.
Most noticeably after going for more pedal after it's shifted into OD.
Is this why the Super chip is so popular on this board and is this normal?
Will the K&N help this any also?
Thanks.

My 00 has the same problem. If i'm on the freeway and want to speed up the only thing to do is pin the throttle and let it downshift. I think the 4.6's in general don't have much bottom end. I'm happy with it though. I'll live with it till I can afford a fix.
