rough idle???? please describe it
I have a 2000 and was sitting in wheil idling waiting for my wife i noticed it would kinda miss every now and then is this the rough idle that every one talks about? I looked at the wiring but didn't see where it needs to be moved to.

I have the exact same problem. I am waiting for some other parts to come in to be replaced and the dealer is going to take a look at it for the rough idle. They are also going to put new motor mounts in it. I don't know why they are putting new mounts in it but they are. I don't think this is related to the rough idle or missing.
The thing that is irritating for me is that it has been two weeks now!
BTW I moved the harness and that didn't help.

Steve,
I am thinkin that you may have THE rough idle and I do too. I am gonna shield and move my harness and hope. I also have an oil leak to check out and the belt squeal and may have the Piston Slap (and it is a Romeo). Sometimes I feel like the guy who reads the medical dictionary and comes down with all of the diseases. I have a gearhead neighbor that is going to listen for the PS.

All engines miss every so often. Have yet to see an engine that didn't. However, on our trucks, the rough idle problem, which I had, is when at idle the engine constantly misses. You can actually see the tach fluctuate. You let go of the brake slowly in drive and the truck jerks as it moves forward against the drag of the brakes. Eventually, the truck will miss so much that you'll think the engine will die and the exhaust smells really rich. At this point, the computer will code and Ford will probably replace the TPS which will cure the problem for a brief period.
Do a search and you'll find the pictures of the wiring harness that we're talking about. The harness is INSIDE a plastic tube/wrap and when this "tube" touches the a/c accumulator tank which is mounted on the passenger side firewall inside the engine compartment (not the a/c condenser which is located forward of the radiator), some of us experience the rough idle situation. In my case, as soon as I moved the harness, the rough idle situation disappeared and my mpg went up over 1 mpg and acceleration went up too.

I moved the wire bundles the second day I had my 2000...no rough idle at all.
It is incredibly smooth compared to the 98 5.4L I had. In the 98..the center arm rest would vibrate. The 2000 is VERY smooth.

I talked to the service rep at Ford and he told me there is a TSB for my truck for the motor mounts. You may be right JMTruck.
They are going to replace the motor mounts when a replacement for my throttle body comes in. That won't be until March! Supposedly, there are only 4 dealers in the country that have the throttle bodies. They are on backorder at their supplier.
You may want to check into motor mounts if the moving the harness doesn't work.
Hey Steve, when was your motor built?

My 1999 5.4L expy has run rough since day 1. Motor mounts were replaced and this does help with vibration. Tried all kinds of different gases. Noise sounds like a lawnmower. Or a manifold seal. Worse in the cold. Rattle or roll on acceleration. I hate driving it because the noise drives me nuts. Dealership adjusted timing all this did was reduce gas miles per gallon to <8. I have had it in to dealer total of 5 times and they have had it 42 days. Any suggestions?

Greetings!
If anyone is able to locate the TSB number for the 2000 5.4 motor mounts (or any other Y2K TSB's), PLEASE post it. I am experiencing the rough idle as well, its not too bad, but definately noticable. Moved the wire harness, but that didn't seem to have any effect.

Steve g, have the same problem (5.4), and I can't see any wire harness that can be moved, the closest one to my A/C condenser is locked down on one of the valve cover screws....I don't think moving a wire harness is going to stop rough idling, Again, I think this is a EPA (Ford thing), anything to get emissions clean on their motors..MO

Sounds strange, but I had the same problem of rough idle one time and they fixed it by replacing a motor mount.

All you people out there that are having the rough idle in the 1999 and 2000 5.4L, are you also experiencing crummy gas milage?
I mean 11 or 12 mpg in city/highway driving.......
The best milage I've gotten in the 3200 miles was 16.3 and that was all interstate 70-75 mph.
Hell, my 97 5.4 would get as high as 18.9 on the same interstate...
My build date for my 00 (engine) 7/13/99, was that a Friday?
One thing though, I had a tonneau cover on my 97.
Who ever finds the TBS on these motor mounts, gets a free month of advise.......
