Maybe not horsepower but the best performance mod. I've done is changing to 4.10 ratio from 3.55.... Truck Capt. America runs like a rocket!! Well, not that fast but it really hooked it up and put 95% of other trucks in 2nd place.. Total cost around $600. A true CHEVY EATER..!! Seat of your pants feel? You bet.. Next time I'll order my truck with this ratio. I'm having fun installing many other mods, but the gears make the truck..

CAPT. AMERICA,

What kind of fuel mileage are you getting with the 4.10 gears?

Cool

54regcab,

I posted this reply a while back and your question made me search it out and post it again. I have discussed this issue (and others) with Shannon from Western Motorsports. I also emailed him the same questions. He is obviously a little bias towards the Velocity Tube, but here is his .02 (for those who care). Here is what I wrote and his reponses to my questions:

Shannon,

I have read about a lot of guys on the web-sites at www.f150online.com and www.fseries.com talking about performance mods they have made to their trucks. Some of the most popular mods that are being installed are:

* SuperChip (Been suggested to add 25 HP and 35-40 ft.lbs. of torque)
* Poweraid (Been suggested to add 20 HP)
* JBA Headers
* Baumann Engineering Shift Kit
* Power Pulleys
* K&N FIPK instead of the Velocity Tube (Suggested to have better flow coming in because it eliminates the air box all together)

Please tell me what you think. Being that you do this for a living makes me and guys on these sites trust and value your judgment. I would appreciate as much information on the above as you can possibly provide. I would also appreciate any suggestions you would have instead of the above if they are not wise.

Just so you know. I will share your recommendations on the web-site if that's OK. I will also pass on your web address: www.wmsracing.com

Regards,

...Deis

Here is Shannon's reply:

Deis,

Here are our opinions about some of the modifications you are asking about.

Superchips - can make a difference, particularily if custom burnt for a truck and combination of parts. The off the shelf chips are OK for a stock truck but question is worth the cost. Best bet is to have chip burnt by experienced tuner with dyno, it will probably take a few tries to find one that makes more power.

Poweraid - if this is the throttle body spacer that spins air into the intake forget about it. Swirl may make some difference keeping fuel suspended in a carb intake but will have no effect on the long runner EFI manifold used in the truck.

JBA hedders - excellent mod although on a stock truck will make little difference in power. The more mods done the engine the more the hedders will help.

Baumann shift kit - we have not used these but generally Baumann makes good products. We use the B&M kit, probably similar setup, that works great.

Pulleys - excellent bang for the buck, add a real 8-10 hp but for the $100 you can't go wrong.

K&N FIPK vs Velocity Tube - biggest difference here is that the K&N uses a filter mounted in the engine compartment that breathes hot air from the engine. Every 11 degrees rise in air temperature is a loss of 1 hp. The Velocity Tube picks up cold air from the inner fender, the stock air box is not restrictive, the tube running from the box to the fender is the restriction, we replace this with a 3" tube, more than enough air for the mod motors.

I hope this answers some of your questions, let me know if you have any further.

My bet is the Superchip. Second would be the Velocity Tube. I have my eyes set on that at the moment.

I would say a complete exhaust or a gear swap as mentioned above. I would place the chip second along with the exhuast.

Dustoff- 16 to 18 mpg mixed driving. Seem to do all my mods. in small bunches. Never really documented a swing one way or the other. Last mod was 4.10 + Superchip + Leveling shackles + Redline products...Drive the same route everyday. Rarely exceed 63 mph. First tank 335 miles.. pumped in 19.96 gallons. That's about normal for me. I'm a slow driver generally..
