5W-20 or 5W-30?

I recently bought a 2001 Ranger that according to the manual specifies 5W-20 oil. I know the Triton engines are calling for it too. I have 3 cases of Amsoil 5W-30, will it hurt the engine to use a slightly thicker synthetic?

Most people here use 5W-30 in theirs, go for it.

In my opinion, 5W-30 won't hurt the engine, other than your mpg. One major caveat, though. As 5W-20 is spec'd, don't be surprised if your warranty isn't honored if something in the engine breaks and your dealer discovers you're using 5W-30 oil.

Personally, I'd sell the old oil and buy 5W-20 for your next change. Perhaps your dealer would consider a trade if the packaging is still current.

I'm at 12K now, switched to Mobil 1 5W30 @ 6K. Running great and getting the advertised 17MPG highway.
