VERY, VERY good point gopher! And I agree..it IS the cold starts that cause the most harm to an engine.
They did recommend the F-150...but I am still scratching my head as to how the Silverado and GMC received a higher rating, but were not recommended. They even had very poor reliability ratings...go figure.

Hello,
Just to show a little incosistantly with Ford. In Canada, Ford recommends an oil change every 5000 KM (3000 Miles) for "Regular" use. Granted, it may have something to do wit the different climate.

Did not read the study, but you all are right -the amount of wear and tear from cold starts is the real culprit- that is why it is more important for an urban driver(not a cabbie) to have there oil changed at 3000 miles or 3 months (which ever occurs first). Drivers who spend a lot of time on the interstates are probably safe in changing oil every 4-5000 miles without problems-
Normally, hours of operation are a good guide to maintenance operations- mining, construction, marine industries, etc all perform service based on hours of operation- not miles- of course rarely do passenger vehicles have hour meters- if they did I think it would be very enlightening- a vehicle with 100k in 3 years is probably no more worn than a than a 10 year old vehicle with 30k miles- change oil/filter every 3000 or 3 months no matter what Consumer reports says! Still an inexpensive way to insure maximum life out of your engine!!!!!!
