It's in there. It is so tight and smooth it looks lke one piece. If the inside diameter is way smaller than the out side diameter of the air box and the inside is cone shaped and not the same shape as the outside of the air box it is still in there. It is hard to see the joints on each end, they look like a mould mark but it does separate there. One more tip. There is a hole in the silencer (inner) tube you can put a finger into and feel the outer wall.

How do you go about getting that thing out. Does it really make that much difference? it is over 2 3/4" on the smallest end. That is the same diameter as the Airaid tubes that replace that part.

I put on a 3" fresh air kit (PVC) on mine today. I spent alot of time looking that over and opted to just leave that tube there. The 3" tube really made a difference even with the stock filter(dirty at that). My new K&N will be here tomarrow. I got that done today so that I could see if it did make any difference. Boy did it too!!

Question Air Intake Question

Some people have posted about removing a restrictor tube that is inside the factory air tube. I checked mine over the weekend and it doesn't feel like there's one in mine.

Any ideas? Do some have them and some don't?

Thanks!

Question

Black98,
What 3" kit are you talking about? Is it the home made one that I've read about on other posts or did you buy it? Are you talking about the tube that goes out the fender wall?

Thanks

F150 sport, The 3" kit, as I refered to it as is just that. It is a new tube from the fender well to the air box. There where different oppinions over the fresh air our under hood air. At this time of year (45 degrees) it is hard to notice any difference. I drove around whithout a tube for about 45 miles then put on the tube. I didn't really notice. So I just put the tube on. It also helps stabalize the filter box.

The installation of this (cheap) tube makes alot of difference in power and acceleration. As for gas milage I cant say. I am putting on a K&N this morning. That should be even better.

This is what I did: I removed the whole intake system from the throttle body back.(you can do it by only removing th filter assembly) I took a piece of PVC pipe 3" sch 40. stick it on the inside of the intake of filter box (side that goes in to fender) and make a mark in the dust inside of the housing. That gives you a good idea of where to cut off the wimpy 1 7/8" rubber snorkel. Then cut off the snorkel just short of the marks. Then take and file the housing down slightly before the marks inside. Then place the tube on a table on its end. Put the housing over the tube (like a mushroom) and pull it down over the tube. It should be tight but don't push so hard that it breaks the housing. Then take the end that goes into the fender and grind off 3/16" from top and bottom. grind it back 2 1/4". This will allow it to slide in to the oval hole in the fender (there is two walls you need to go to the outside hole). There you have it a 3" fresh air kit.

As far as the restrictor tube goes, when I had mine out I was going to remove it. When I looked at it I couldn't see how it would help. It starts at about 4" then tapers to the same size as the throttle body itself. This tube must have some purpose. It is almost built as a ram air tube. Ram air tubes are always larger on the intake side and neck down just before being mixed with fuel. causing the air to become more dense. The other reason that i left it because it reminded me of a type of boost bottle. A boost bottle holds air in a chamber for use when you need it. such as when the throttle is suddenly opened. this reduces hesitation. On motorcycles we alway try to come up with ways of making this vey thing on our bikes. So That is my oppinion take it or leave it.

Sorry for the untruth on the airaid
