Cool

To All,

I just got my truck back from the service dept. and my ROUGH IDLE IS GONE! My service invoice reads:

Neutralized engine, Trans, and exhaust system SSM #12738
INSULATOR ASY - ENGI
INSULATOR ASY
The service guy told me they replaced the front motor mounts.

I feel like I have a new truck at 4000 miles!

On another note the reason I went to LS Ford vs. NM Ford is LS gave me a much better deal on my truck. Service could be a different story, but so far so good. This could be a whole new topic alltogether.

They replaced the throttle body too. But that was for my sticking gas pedal.

I was told that different configurations are calibrated differently. Also, if everyone who has the rough idle also has the towing package then that might be useful info. to uncover. Glad to here about the motor mounts. The idle that you had fixed was I assume and intermittent kind of vibration like the motor was missing?

I know what an engine feels when its missing 1 cylinder... What I have doesn't feel anything like that! Its more of a slight vibration that is not constant... Like the engine was not machined very well! Like the harmonic balancer doesn't work right??

How could I tell if the harmonic balancer was not made/balanced correctly for this engine? That will ruin an engine over time!

I am assuming that this new FQR Engine came with its own new balancer?? They aren't stupid enough to put the balancer from my old 5.4 to the new one are they??

1stFord, I used your info to get my dealer going and he is going to do the same thing you had. I am taking it in tommorrow. Wish me luck and I will report back. The way my dealer explained it to me they undo all of the exhaust system and transmission mounts, then start the engine, let it run in neutral, shift to drive, rev the engine, and then back to neutral, then when in neutral they tighten up the mounts again. This apparently helps the system to seat itself. The idea as I understand it to be is that the powertrain is not seated properly in the mounts so an uneven vibration is transmitted to the cab. Wish me luck, and I will report back when I get my truck back.

I have the rough idle problem. Intermittent and not too severe but noticable at traffic lights. I called my Ford dealer in Athens, Alabama and he gave me some more info that I have not seen here on f150online. I gave him the 99-6287 number and he was unable to cross-reference it to Ford's numbers. So he did a sympton search using my VIN and came up with 3 or 4 SSMs (Special Service Messages 13888, 13889, 13839) where Ford acknowledges the rough idle problem. From what I remember, Ford says the rough idle problem is caused by faulty programming of the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). The service guy called it the "brain box". A fix is not available and dealers should NOT attempt repair of the problem until they recieve the TSB with the fix. The fix will more than likely be flashing the PCM with a software patch to correct the rough idle. The service guy told me to keep checking back once a week until the TSB came out. He said that once the SSM is out the TSB is not usually far behind. If anybody finds out anything different please post.

I just wanted to take the time to thank all of you for the info I got from this thread.
I too suffer from the rough idle problem and though it's minor, I'm like you guys and it bothers me.
I'm gonna take this info to my dealer's service dept. and will either get a "Gee Thanks!" or the "I hate armchair mechanics" attitude.
Either way, I'll update to let you know what happens.

Thanks!

(P.S. I rode in a 2000 GMC Sierra with a co-worker to lunch the other day and guess what, ROUGH IDLE! I almost had him talked into an F150 after he rode in mine, but he leases and got a good deal.)

My '97 4.2L has a rough idle sometimes at start-up. and sometimes it doesn't want to start up very well at all.
What needs to be fixed or replaced? spark plugs?
It even did this when i went to pick up my truck after they did the timing chain cover recall work, but I didn't think about going and telling them about it.

I don't own a ford but my 98 chevy ext-cab Z-71 w/5.7L does the same thing. Last year when it became real noticable to me I took it to three different dealers which all hooked it up to the computer and all came back saying everything is normal. I then had my original dealer let me start up both new and used trucks on their lot and all of these trucks had the slightly rough idle like mine. All of my friends with ford trucks have the same rough idle as my chevy. I've just learned to live with mine. I think that some people are just more sensitive to how their vehicles run. As a last note, almost all late model fuel injected vehicles of all makes that I have driven have what to me feels like a slightly rough idle.

With all due respect I would have to disagree with you wtd. My truck runs smooth now, just like the day I bought it.

Good luck cybweed.

Cool

1stFord, I also purchased mine at LS due to better deals, but I have always used NM for service. Although LS seems to have done better with this problem than NM has, I got mine back with a "could not duplicate" again. By the time I got home it was doing the same thing, I will print this for the next trip.
As for this being "normal", as I stated earlier, I had the assistant service manager look at my truck while it was idling rough, and he said there was definately rough. Never tried to tell me it was normal.
