Angry Cylinder head oil leak problem returns

S**T!! I changed my oil today and found out there's oil leaking AGAIN from the cylinder head. Last December, I had the oil leak problem fixed at 23K miles. Now I have 34K miles and it looks like it's started leaking again. Anyone else have this happen to them more than once? Now I'm convinced on getting an extended warranty or selling the truck next year. This sucks!!

4.6L head gasket leak

F150 2000 Lariat 4.6L right side head gasket leak at 25K. Is this modular engine a lemon as both the 5.4 and 4.6 have this on going problem? Dealer says will replace with a stronger forged head? Can you get a extended warranty this late in the mileage?

I seriously doubt you'll get a new head with so many miles. Good luck. There's very few who've gotten a new engine or head. Lucky them, I guess. Last time, all they did was replace the head gasket. Kinda pointless I think. I checked out FordESP.com and the website can give you an instant quote

WOW - same month and almost the same miles as me! Last December at 22k miles, they replaced my leaker and slapper with an FQR. Now, at 32k miles, it has a bad leak again. Don't know what they are going to do about it yet. I too have thought about extended warranty, but my lease is up in 3 months and I think I will let them have this truck back, eventhough everything else is awesome about it. My lease buyout is $19k...extended warranty plus tax means I would be buying this truck for $22k. That's a little higher than what they are going for right now.

By all means, take it in and demand a new engine. I had my original 5.4l fixed at around 18,000 miles, and at 32,000 miles it started leaking agian, and started knocking the first time. I brought it back in, they looked at it, complained about the engine knock. They dropped the oil pan and saw that the lower bearings were just about burnt completely, so they replaced the engine with a FQR, and haven't had any problems with it since then, and I now have 60,000 miles on the truck....No problems, and this motor seems to be stronger than the original in the truck. Just my expirence. Any questions, just ask.

4.6L head gasket oil leak

Got the truck back after 3 days. They relaced the head (remanufactured head - but used some of the parts off the old head -"replaced head, swap head parts to new head cam gear & accessories"), head gasket, oil filter assembly, crankshaft font oil seal, left/right/center gasket, cleaned carbon build up on pistons, changed the oil and antifreeze, changed the heater blower motor - a couple of months ago they replaced the oil sending unit (no response on cold standing), replaced the wiper motor switch (activated whenever it felt like it), replaced the wiper motor cover - recall.

Shouldn't they have used a new head? And so the stuff about a differently forged head was bull, right?

But now, but now, there is a slight stumbling idle. I can kind of feel it during hwy speeds and especially at acceleration. Also, I have noticed a leak near the oil filter but it is not the oil filter - what the heck is that - oil pump body seal TSB BC5183961001?

Brother!!?

When they replaced the gaskets did they check the head and block for flatness? As you guys probably know all the older dodge neons had head gaskets leaks and a lot of the blocks had to be milled before you put the new gasket on.

No. No indication that block was touched. I have been checking and they replaced head with XL3Z-6049 head, the one used to increase power on the mustang GT. Do different heads on opposite sides of the motor create a power imbalance resulting in the stumbling idle that I now experience. Shouldn't the heads on both sides of the engine be the same? Will future problems result from different heads on engine?

This is getting more interesting by the minute.

When they did mine, they asured me that the head and block was in specs. I guess it wasn't. I think now I gonna request some good Felpro gaskets.

Arl: If they did infact replace one head with a performance one and left the other head stock that could definitely screw up the motor. I think it could be the source of your idle problem. Are you sure your 2 heads are different? If so whoever ordered that new head is a bonehead.

4.6l head gasket leak

I checked around and the oem for the head has a different number for the part, the last four letter designators are different. The one they put on is xl3z-6049-BARM but it calls for a xl3z-6049-AARH, what ever that means. I do know from looking around that the BARM is for a 99 mustang. I also know that the letter designators vary depending upon how complete the head is, as delivered.

I guess my question is, "Does anyone out there know how this numbering system works, and what it means."

BTW, I looked at the rear head/block connection and with 700 miles on the replaced head I see weeping oil. This is certainly going to get worse
