So I guess $7.21 was not too bad for K&N's?

Yeah, I guess I didn't take the curb weight of your truck into consideration also. Isn't the tow capacity on these trucks over 8,000 lbs though? 5300 lbs is 2700 lbs less than max. That is quite a bit.

98fword,
Very true about the bypass valve, however, it is dirty, unfiltered oil. New engines don't produce enough shavings to completely clog the filter..the point I was trying to make that oil restriction is still not a good thing. If you leave your filter on for an extended period of time well past the recommended interval..it will naturally become more and more restricted due to crap it has collected over time. This is why the filter must also be replaced frequently.

All4chem..
I am also not sure what type of oil pump is on our truck and I do not know how much of an increase it will produce. When I discovered that FRAM uses a PLASTIC bypass valve..I immediately thought the same thing you did and...its ability to produce a good seal on a cold start. Then when I experienced the 'valve rattle syndrome' shortly after I installed a FRAM on my 98 5.4L, I had my answer. I removed it after hearing this a few times..and put a Motorcraft back on...and the noise went away immediately.

I also paid $10.00 for my Mobil 1 filter.

You mean not everyone changes their filters at 3K? Shame, shame, shame!

Only if I use it for "severe" service, which would include driving it on a cloudy day

98FWORD,
I'm glad you said something because I was thinking the same thing. I try to go every 3k miles. Often times I'm a little late. For the record I use a K&N filter and Castrol Syntec ( <-- I think) full synthetic.

I recently bought my '98 EXPY with 4.6L and 16,000 miles. I plan to service the same way I have my '88 4Runner (150K miles), '76 BMW2002 (140K miles) both of which I've owned since new.

1) Use only Mobil 1 oil
2) spin off the filter and change it at 2,500 miles, top off oil
3) change the oil at 5k miles.

this is cheap insurance in my mind.

My 98 Expy (5.4) has about 55K on it now... The 5.4 was changed to an FQR at 50K. Hence, I basically have a new engine. I've decided that after many threads and articles the Amsoil is the absolute best way to go.

I'm finding more and more places that carry the product!!!

I run Amsoil 5W-30 as recommended by the engineers at Ford!

I use the Mobile1 filter. Change it every 3- 5K and do a complete oil change once a year!!!

I already have about 4K on the Amsoil with about 500 miles of hard towing. The oil still looks very good and feels just like it did when new! LIKE BUTTA BABY!!!

Mobile1 is a very good product, however, you still have to change it all the time. Or at least thats what they tell you... My father ran Mobile1 and changed it every 25K. He got 380K out of a GM 3.8 engine! ALL HIGHWAY MILES!!!!! Engines will run and last forever when you get em on the open road and let em run hot for long periods!
