Question Stock Air Box Modifications?

Ok guys, I bought my F150 Lariat Loaded so I am kind of broke! I can't run out any buy an Airaide, AF1. I did buy a K&N air filter! To allow more intake area I have thought about cutting away the top half of my air box (the area that covers the filter-long ways). Leaving the fender air horn in place and allowing the filter to mate and mount to the stock mounts and hold together rign (don't know the tech name for it). A smalll area about 2" wind would remain to cover the bottom of the filter to keep mud from hitting from below. Any ideas of why I should not do this or any other ideas relating to my idea.

I did this mod on my 99 FS. I only cut the top 1/2 off and left the bottom 1/2 in place. I did this mod after a muffler change to a glasspak which kept the stock tail pipe. After the muffler change, the truck felt alittle more sluggish and didn't have the throttle response. The air box mod increased throttle response noticeably and pushed my mileage back up to stock levels, but no increase in MPG. I think it helps if you opened up the exhaust but with stock muffler, not sure of the gains. I still have the stock paper air filter but will switch to the K&N soon. I'm happy with the results. Good Luck.

Talking

I did the exact thing your talking about, without the muffler exchange, which is coming soon. The difference is very noticable in the idle and takeoff of the truck. I hope the same is true of the new flowmaster i recently ordered.

Thumbs up Excellent results for Air Box Mod!

I went out and modified the stock air box. I removed approx 2/3 of the OEM box. (See first post this thread). I felt a smoother idle and when I hit the gas pedal...very different than stock! Quick response and stronger pull through 3700rpm...after that I couldn't tell a big change. All I know is a 20 min. mod to the OEM air box has made a difference. I'll watch my fuel milage and see if there is any change. Not a bad low/no buck mod. I'll keep the shell of the area of plastic I remove and black tap it in place if I need to take in for warranty service (may not even matter).

you may want to consider going to a junk yard and buying one from a wreck. that way if it goes in for service, you won't have to explain the taped up air box

Good idea!

Greg Mc your idea is right on...I'll just buy on from a wreck or maybe from someone on this site real cheap then just to the switch if needed.
