Question

My question is, when can I make the switch from regular to synthetic lubes? My brand new 2000 SuperCab 4X4 is just about to turn its first 1000 miles. How long should I wait to give the engine/difs time to break in before changing?

------------------
Stock Stuff:
Y2K SCab 4X4, Chesnut Metallic, 5.4L, 3.55 Limited Slip, Skid Plates, Factory AM/FM/CD, 40/60 Split Bench, Sliding Rear Window, Towing Package and Keyless Entry.

Extras so far:
305/70X16 GY Wrangler AT's on American Eagle Series 146 chrome wheels.

Future plans:
Flowmaster or Gibson exaust system, spray in liner, stainless step bars, hood deflector, chip?, K&N? we'll see.

onemilmhz,
As a rule of thumb, 5,000 on your engine and 15,000 on your diff. The engine should be broken in by then and the gear oil will have meshed the gears and need the wear particled to be changed out with the gear oil.

Sincerely, Kevin

Feels like I'm surrounded . Doesn't anyone like NeoOil? I found it surfing for synthetic oils and have used it for just a little over a year now. No complaints.

The oil I really liked was a product called "Synthoil", but I can't find it anymore. Anyone ever hear of it nowadays? Used a System 1 filter and Synthoil in my '83 Honda. Believe it or not, I dropped the oil every 40,000 miles and never did anything to the filter (lazy). Oil always looked the color of weak coffee. That Honda was a gem. Gave it to the kid to use for college at 180,000 with no concerns at all. She put another 60,000 before graduating 'into enough money' to by a faster ride.

Pole results looks like-

Mobil 1- 16
Amsoil- 7
Redline- 1
Valvoline- 3
LE- 1
NeoOil- 1

I haven't been able to find Amsoil, Redline, LE or NeoOil in my local stores. Mobil 1 is about $5 per quart, Valvoline is about $3.50 per quart, Castrol is about $4 per quart. I plan on changing my oil at least every 5,000 miles. Since I work for a company that's Mobil's compitition I think my company would frown on me using Mobil 1. I do know my company is a supplier for Valvoline and others. Looks like I may try Valvoline or Castrol.
Thanks for everyones replies

Jim

There are really some choices that you could run across for quality, some have better qualities than others.

Amsoil
Mobil 1
LE
Valvoline Synpower

Depends on what you want, best cost/benefit, extended drains, best heat protection etc. Be sure to do your homework.

I use the Amsoil Series 2000 0w-30 and extended drains.

Question

I was just wondering if anyone found that you used any oil after switching over to synthetic? I put in Mobil 1 on my first change and I am using a little now. Not enough to worry about yet, but??? I have 6500 kms so far so you would think its broken in.

Cool

What's happening MSparks?

Okay guys its very simple, if your looking for performance and longevity go with the SYN, but if you are trading after a few years or 60 to 100 thousand miles stay with the conventional oils and save money.

85 Maxima 326,000
91 Sentra 188,000
96 Maxima 77,000
Approx. 330hp 98 XLT F150 45,000

All vehicles are completely lubed with Royal Purple. Purchased by the 5gal. pal its equivalent to $3.00 per qt. My oil drain intervals are 10,000 miles.

You can feel the difference.

Thanks to Michael Sparks I will be going to switch to Amsoil XL-7500 Synthetic. I'm even going to start using Series 2000 Synthetic 2-Cycle Racing oil for my 4 motorcycles.
