Paradeis--
I lived in north/central Wisconsin for 15 years and my vehicles would always whine when first started in the extreme cold (well near 0 degrees that is). More pronounced the colder it was.

I consider this very normal...as long as it goes away once the engine starts to warm up. An engine block heater should help you out big time (not sure where it goes in the F-150)...it does not get that cold way down here in Georgia! I admit..I FLED the cold!! hahaha

TNT:
Search the boards for many posts on the door crack. There is even a link on the f150online home page on the topic. Basically, on a majority of 97-99 f-150's (so far)eventually develop a horizontal metal fatigue crack in the sheet metal, located on the door, right as the sill rounds up to vertical near the back edge of the glass. It's thought to be caused by the repeated stress/flex caused by the power window motor.

Dustoff...

It just concerned me 'cause it's a sound that I never heard in the 98...no matter how cold it was. When I was up in the Rockies hunting over the past few years, it got down to -40 and still not a peep as far as this whining noise. Thus, I dunno!

Hey Dustoff,

I have only been running 87 octane in it.
About 2 weeks ago I switched from Citgo to Amoco. I get that whine at start up too. Must be the cold weather here in Wisconsin.

This rough idle thing sure is hard to pin down...

Another friend of mine has a 1997 4.6L F-150..and he has tried just about everything..and it still runs rough. He has also had it in the shop..but they could not fix the problem. He is going to try and move those infamous wire bundles next....

1stFord...where in cheese-land are you from? Near Madison, Eau Claire? I use to live in Hudson..on I-94 right on the Minnesota boarder. I miss it...but not so much the winters.

Hey Dustoff,

I hope I don't run into the same problem your buddy did. I plan on taking it in soon. I was going to wait for 5K but that is a little too far off. The idle isn't extremely rough but it is noticeable.

BTW I live near Appleton.

Well just to keep you all up to date. I just got my truck back from the dealer. It is possible that it may have the infamous pistonslap. It knocks when it's cold and it has done it since new( I'm at 8000kms).They have been in contact with Ford engineering and are waiting for a response.
It is loud when it is cold and fades out in about 5 min. It is loud enough that people turn and look when it's cold.
The engineers said they have a few reports of this in the 2000 5.4 but as of yet they don't know what it is.
With a stethisope(spelling?) sound seems to be loudest around the cat convert and in the exhaust but it sounds like it's in the engine they have replaced the cats on others with out the problem being fixed.
I guess we will have to wait and see.

I spoke to the service manager at my dealership about any piston slap problems in the 2000 5.4s a few weeks ago when I picked up my truck. They have not replaced a single 2000 engine (with the piston slap problem)...however..they were very busy dropping in replacement engines in 97 - early 99 models about a year ago.

So far so good with this 2000 LEV 5.4L... 779 miles.

Power sucks, and blows smoke.
6k and in the shop. They "think" they know the fix. Valve seats are possibly screwed.
For the price I could have gotten a V-10SD.
More power better suspension and heavier duty.
My wife still likes it.

Nick (as in Saint Nicholas -- as in my Christmas Present to me) has been with me for 268 days without a slap or crack. I had the inner fender mudflaps installed (warranty - tsb) today; and had a weeping power-steering hose (same thing on my '97) fixed a couple of weeks ago.

12K on the clock -- and 10.2 MPG towing a 20' Wilderness for 150 miles last weekend was better than the 7.8 MPG with the same trailer with the '97.

Color me happy!
