RWL,
I got my new 2000 truck with the 5.4L engine in early October. I absolutely love my truck! This is my first F-150, and have had no problems at all...no slap, no leaks of any kind...knock on wood. Welcome to the club!!
Good Luck!

Had my 5.4 for a little over a month now so there's not a lot of history to talk about, but so far it's perfect.

RWL, if you're in the middle of ordering you might consider (535) Trailer Towing Group.
It adds:
7-wire Harness(plus 4 pin adaptor)
Class III Hitch
HD Shocks
HD Electrical/Cooling Pkg.
(Wouldn't want you to dump the F150 cause it still can't tow your limit.)
------------------
99 Lariat Normal Cab 2WD 120"WB 5.4 3.55LS Tow
Dark Toreador/Gold Line-X

F150's of Virginia
Just cause we're from Virginia don't mean we're(well, you know)

I am new around here also. Just purchased a 1999 expedition. I have heard that a 5.4 after april is not prone to piston slap. Heard the problem was fixed after that date. I really like this vehicle but, this talk about bad engines has me scared. I am a first time ford buyer. What have you heard? Thanks.

Got my 2000 in mid October. So far, it's the best vehicle I've owned. All previous year problems have been corrected, with the exception of the door crack thing. No one seems to know for sure about that one....

I bought mine in October. The only problem I have is a slightly rough idle, but I heard this is the normal. It has something to do with the computer changing to a leaner mixture on the highway for example. It takes a little time for the computer to adjust itself when you are not driving on the highway anymore. That's where you feel a little rough. At least mine is like this. Anyway. I will be taking it in for the 5000 mile check-up in about 1500 more miles. I am going to ask them about it then.
Or maybe it's because it's just so fricking cold where I live!
I am a 1st time ford buyer and it probably won't be my last.

3500 KM's on my new baby so far and I haven't heard the slap so far. I do however hear another noise first thing in the morning when I am starting it up. For the past week or so, it has been a little bit nippy up here in Calgary. It's been dipping into the -15 to -20 degrees Celsius (+5 to -4 Fahrenheit). When I start my truck, I here a whining sound; not high pitched, infact, very low pitched. It lasts 4 - 5 seconds and then goes away. It does not occur at any other time during the day and it does not occur when it gets to about -5 degrees Celcius (+23 degrees Fahrenheit). Any thoughts (besides "...get the hell outta the cold...!" and NO to the question "...isn't Calgary near Ankorage...?")
Talk to you guys later,
...Deis

1stFord..
Are you by chance burning PREMIUM fuel?
On page 211 of the 2000 Owner's manual, paragraph..'Fuel Quality'..it states:
"If you are experiencing starting, ROUGH IDLE, or hesitation driveability problems during a cold start, try a different brand of "Regular" unleaded gasoline.
"Premium" unleaded gasoline is NOT RECOMMENDED (particularly in the United States) because it may cause these problems to become more pronounced."
I have been burning only 87 Octane...no rough idle at all.
