Unhappy 1998 4.6 4X4 Bad Head Gasket

Had the Check Engine Light come on a few weeks ago, after a backfire, but went out 3 days later. Came on again and stayed on. Slight miss. Changed O2 Sensor, light remained on. Did not disconnect battery.

Found puddle of coolant this morning and constant drip from rear left of block. Looked like rear of left side head. Took to Ford this morning, they say bad head gasket. Have only 65k miles on it. Ford says no warranty and may cost $700 to replace gasket.

Love my truck!!! No complaints till now. Only mod I made was to add a K&N filter.

Anyone have any luck dealing with Ford on replacement of bad head gasket out of warranty? Drive daily only highway miles commuting to work.

I aggree - sounds like you might have to pay for that one - i have not heard from anyone around here that has had the same problem. I have 65k on my 1999 - that was built in oct 1998 - and a buddy of mine has a 1997, and another with a 1998.

If this is the first thing that has gone wrong with your truck - then you can still consider yourself ahead of the game - becuase an extended warranty would have cost you more than $700.

Best of Luck

Thanks for the advice! Not the best news though. Had great luck with Ford for last 14 years. Started out with a 86 Bronco II, then an 88 Ranger Xcab 4X4, the wife has a 95 explorer with 97k miles on it. Got the F150 Xcab 4X4 in Dec. of 97. My neighbor still has the Ranger and now has 167k miles on it.

I'll update this when I get a final cost from Ford.

Thanks again!

Just talked to Ford Customer Relations about my Truck. Still in shop and now on day 11. Was told by dealer I need to have both heads machined to the tune of $1,800. Ford will pay half!!! Yipee for me...should have it back by Wednesday.
