i dont get what you are saying. Are you stating it like you dont believe it or that you do and you dont like it?
i would have to think that a regular cab 5.3 with 3.73 would have to run between 15.0 and 15.5 so a chipped, exhaust, and air filtered one should be in the 14's

Check out LS1.com. There's a few Silverado's (5.3L) with a few mods doing high 14's.

and that's fine. We know that Chevy's have a faster acceleration in the short run. I think the Fords will be a little closer to that when they go to 3 valve in 2003.

Cool

HI!... I have NO problem beating those CHEVY's! As for the 3-valve heads, a buddy of mine has a ton of them fully assembled at the machine shop he works at. I've seen them and even picked a pair up. The camshaft looks really weird in that it has a lot of lobes on it. It's going to be two small intake valves and one large exhaust valve. In my opinion FORD's should of done the opposite because we all know that these heads don't flow good on the exhaust side. Also sparkplug changes will be easier because the sparkplug ports are now coming through the center of the valve covers. The way I've heard though these won't be available till 2004 on the 5.4. I hope it's going to be sooner, so I can pick up a set with the spiecal intake manifold and bolt them on my 5.4 crate engine.

Yeah, but can it haul or tow anything?? And I don't want to hear a smart a$$ comment like, "It will haul or tow a Ford" either....

Chevy sells their trucks by the high HP claim.

They all have high rpm power, but cant tow anything.

Chevies pull great! Just because the peak torque is at a higher rpm does not mean it does not make near that from about 1500 rpm and up. Have any of you ever even looked at the power curve of a Chevy engine? The 5.3 may not have the low end grunt of the 5.4, but it is not gutless. In fact, the 60 foot times are almost identical at around 2.2- 2.3 stock. Loading does not make as much of a difference as you may think.

All things said, yes, the 5.4 is a better engine for towing in a half ton, but if I wanted my truck for towing I would have bought a 3/4 ton with the 6.0 or the 8.1, both of which will out tow everything but a diesel (5.4 and the V 10) and thats been proven.

i think the v-10 is better compared to the big block, not the 6.0 liter chevy. i seriously doubt the 6.0 liter chevy will out pull the v-10.

Talking

To be honest, I couldn't put 1000#'s in the bed without the thing bottoming out on the bump stops! I've since added some overload springs, which at least keeps it from looking like it's loaded. However, it was able to always move this weight around. Sure, you knew it was loaded up, but it was not straining at all. I've also had the bed loaded with 1000#'s and had a utility trailer with another 1000#'s in it. Again, not going to break any 0-60 times, but had no problem merging onto the freeway or passing or going up hills or stopping.

I've not towed anything over 2000#'s yet. Still don't have a brake controller yet, but I just tossed that question out there to see what would happen. Sure, anyone who is going to be really hauling or towing anything significant, they should not have gotten a 1/2 ton in the first place.

Something just sticks in my mind that when some magazine tested these trucks, they timed them empty and loaded. The Chevy won empty, but the Ford won loaded.

Dunno. Seems most people buy their truck because of brand and not what all the numbers say. I like my Ford, and when I need to tow or haul more, I'll buy a bigger Ford. Chevy/Dodge, whatever, are good trucks too. They wouldn't have sold very many if they weren't. Just buy what YOU want. Not what somebody else TELLS you you "should" buy.

Unhappy

Anyone read the 4 truck comparison in April's Car and Driver? Here is some acceleration information without and with a 1000lb payload (the second figure is with the weight)

Truck/Motor----0-30mph-----0-60mph------0-80mph
------------------------------------------------------------------
Ford 5.4L--------2.8/3.6s-----9.3/11.3s------16.3/20.3s
Chevy 4.8L-----3.2/3.7s-----9.2/10.8s------16.4/18.7s
Dodge 4.7L-----3.2/3.5s----10.1/11.7s-----19.3/22.7s
Toyota 4.7L-----2.9/3.5s-----8.6/10.3s------14.9/18.4s

Apparently the 5.4L with the weight takes longer to accelerate than the 4.8L Chevy, so I would think the 5.3 would be even better? I was kind of sorry to read this information....

All trucks were extended cab, 4x4, short bed trucks. The magazine wanted the 4.6 for an even comparison (they were after base v8's) but Ford sent a 5.4 instead.

The Ford ranked last, criticized for 5.4L power, harsh FX4 ride, and rear seat room in extended cab. I think it will start lookin better when the updated 5.4 (3-valve heads) is introduced... whenever it is introduced. They liked the styling and high stance.
