Question Can I use nitrous on my truck?

I have been toying with the idea of putting nitrous on my truck. I really dont know if this is a good idea or not. So I need someone to set me straight on the whole idea.
Will my motor/tranny be able to stand up to a 50hp shot? Do they make a 25hp shot? Should I use a wet or dry set up? What should I expect to pay for the kit? There are probably hundreds of other questions I should be asking but I cant think of any more right now. Any info would be appreciated.

Cool

HI!... This end up : You can install a nitrous kit on your truck but I would'nt advise it. Your engine is built with HYPEREUTECTIC pistons and they tend NOT to like too much nitrous. You should be safe with a 25H.P shot but I definately would not go over a 50H.P shot. If you can find a wet system to use you should be able to tap into the shrader valve on the fuel rail for your gas supply. On a 50H.P kit or if you do decide to go more, you will have to either change your fuel rail to an aftermarket one or give the N.O.S system it's own dedicated fuel system. That means it's own fuel pump and regulator. The factory fuel rail has a NON adjustable, fuel regulator and is part of the fuel rail so it cannot be removed. SEAN HYLAND sells a aftermarket fuel rail for our trucks that you can use a adjustable fuel regulator with. It's not cheap, like $250(U.S). I would stay away from a DRY N.O.S system because from my experience you never get the full H.P rating with a dry set-up and it is very easy to get a LEAN condition with this kind of system. Now if you had a good set of quality FORGED pistons in your engine like the LIGHTNING's do, then you would be able to use around a 125-150H.P shot with out any worries, if you have the proper fuel system set-up for it. As for your motor, it will handle a 25-50H.P shot with no problems. Your tranny you might have to start worrying about around the 50H.P shot if you hit the N.O.S from a dead stop in 1ST gear at the track or on the street where traction is good. If I were you I would go with some of the more popular H.P bolt ons 1ST. They will be a bit more money but you have that H.P all the time and don't have to worry about filling up your NITROUS bottle all the time. Here in CANADA it costs $5.00 a LB to fill up a NITROUS bottle. Most kits come with a 10LB bottle. So thats $50.00(CAN) everytime you have to fill the bottle. It will be cheaper in the U.S. Most NITROUS kits that you would be looking for will be around the $400 - $500(U.S) range. For $500(U.S) you can get a SUPERCHIP (25H.P) a AIRAID KIT (14H.P) and ASP power pulleys (7-10H.P). That would give you about a true 40-45H.P that you can use all the time. Just look at my SIG, I've increased my H.P a ton without N.O.S and I have that "POWER" all the time. I hope this helps you out and if you have anymore questions, just feel free to ask.

Hey Neal,
I am also looking at doing the Single shot wet systems on the NAV. I don’t think there will be any blowers available for my engine for quit some time. I have researched a little and the whole trick (correct me please) is to make sure your fuel mixer it set correctly (tuned) while at WOT (which is at open loop mode anyway) this is to avoid “pinging”. Mike can do this with a reprogram job of the “SUPERCHIPS”. I have read almost all the threads about this subject on this site and find that most the accusations are unfounded do to someone’s (no names mentioned) little fire along with improper usage at ALL throttle ranges. NOS is an inert gas (non flammable) “YOU CAN BREATHE IT” ha ha ha. I personally find my current power range adequate for now but there will always be that desperate moment where more will be needed.
A single “wet” shot (injected with gas) would put me into the 500HP club. (WOOHOO).
There are a lot of NOS systems out there which one would you suggest?

People are always knocking hypereutectic pistons, truth is that they are pretty tough. My 94 Lightning has survived an additional 214 extra rear wheel HP (documented not estimated), no problems with the STOCK hypereutectic pistons (head gaskets popped though). My 94 Mustang is surviving an additonal 165 rwhp, 238 rwhp on the gas (documented not estimated), no problems with the stock pistons. Proper tuning and sensible RPM's go a LONG way, and an improper tune won't be cured with forged pistons (they'll just tolerate more abuse). Forged pistons have their place, and yes I DO prefer them. I'm on a budget, so until it breaks I won't relace it, dollar-per-HP gained analysis and utilizing stock components is what I love to do. I am greedy and I don't recommend these power levels to people who run their rig as a daily driver.

Nitrous kits, I recommend Nitrous Express (wet). There is NO WAY a chip, pulley kit, and AirAid would out perform a 50 HP shot (on your 4.6). NX kits deliver an addtional 50 RWHP, the numbers quoted above (Neal) will get you about 25 rwhp tops (optimistic). A progressive controller will also allow you to run a MUCH bigger shot safely. A controller will cycle the solenoids like a fuel injector, eventually cycling in a full shot. This is great, but it's REAL tough on the solenoids.

LaserNav, Paxton has a kit for your Nav.

Thumbs down

HI!... WHITE TRASH : The H.P figures I quoted for the above mods are very accurate and have been proven on a "EDDY" current dyno. Those are flywheel H.P #'s by the way. All nitrous kits are rated on FLYWHEEL H.P increses, not RW H.P. I am yet to see a nitrous kit actually make more H.P than the kit is rated at. 99% of the time the nitrous kits out there make LESS H.P then their advertised at. I have seen time and again engines with melted pstons in them when they were torn down. Most of them were with HYPEREUTECTIC pistons and others were just with poor fuel management. LEAN out. I'm not knocking HYPEREUTECTIC pistons. Their good pistons for naturally asperated engines. I've seen guys go up to 650H.P with them. I have a 535H.P 351-w in my garage right now that has KEITH BLACK HYPEREUTECTIC pistons in it. I just personally don't like them in a nitous engine. All the engines that I build for heavy nitrous applications I use only TOP NOTCH forged pistons. Just my opinion.

Hey Neal, thanks for the feedback. I've never heard of an "Eddy" current engine dyno, just chassis dynos. I assume this is what you mean when you say "flywheel HP", that the mods were measured on an engine dyno. I think those numbers you quoted would be accurate on an engine dyno. Since all I work with are chassis dynos, this is what I talk about.

As far as the nitrous kits, Nitrous Express kits will deliver within 5-10 rwhp of what they rate it at. I agree, most kits don't give you 100 rwhp from a 100hp shot (especially NOS). NX kits work very well.

I also agree on the hyper-pistons, they can be a weak link if abused. I will continue to push mine (in my Mustang), and when the time comes for a rebuild, they will be forged.

Later.

Cool

this-end-up,

You might want to check out the 4.6 section over at corral.net . If anyone has found out what the 4.6 can handle it's those guys. I would think a 100 shot or less would do it. Nitrous is tough on parts because of the on/off nature, but used properly should work fine.

LaserNAV,

Both Kenne Bell and Vortech advertise blower apps for your truck.

LaserNav,

I saw a supercharger Navigator in a 4X4 magazine once. I might still have it laying around. I'm pretty sure it was a Kenne Bell. Like signmaster said, they make em.
