Post Best method on change p/s fluid

I did the search thing and found a few innovative methods, and the Turkey Baster made me chuckle...

Wondering since it's not outlined in my haynes manual, if someone has a good plan for changing the p/s fluid. I've got my eyes on some Mobil 1 Mercon, that i would like to get in 'er before the weekend.

TIA

I did the Mobil 1 Synthetic fluid...It did quiten down the PS system. I used a long funnel and pulled off the low pressure side going into the pump. and let it drain. I then filled it back up and ran it. I repeated this procedure 3 or 4 times and am sure I got most of the old stuff out.

And, is it correct that the system holds 2.4 pints? I'll keep an eye on how much comes out, but it would be nice to know how much to buy. maybe i'll just get a whack of it, and replace my 5gear oil too...

Well, it was too cold tonight to do the full disconnect on the lines, so i tried the turkey baster method.

Managed to pull about 500 ml's out of the resevoir. Filled it up again with Mobil 1 Synth ATF - took the truck for a rip, and it is noticeably smoother and easier to turn.

I'll be eyes/ears wide open tomorrow morning when I start it at -20something...

Highly recommend this to those whom have not changed to synth in the p/s...

Question

Does the change to synthetic help that annoying whine when turning?? Does everyone have that sound in the steering?? If it quiets this sound, I'm changing ASAP!

george, mine was making the noise during the first few mins of the engine running, but has become increaseing louder recently. When i took it for a spin, it was 100% quiet.

I'll let you know after she sits overnight - it's -14 and snowing here, so it'll be as good a test as any.

When I did the turkey baster method, I had to attach a piece of hose on the end of the baster to get down in there good.

I sucked out as much as I could, replace the fluid, drove for about 1 week, then did the whole thing over again. I figure that I have about 90% synthetic in there.

Yes I believe that the synthetic in there does cut down on the whine when you turn!

Question

Sounds like the way to go.

If a syntehetic is added, is there a compatibility concern?

What is the best synthetic to use? Mobil ATF?

Another tip,

Changed Power steering fluid in my car last week (dextron III) and used a gear-lube pump that screws onto a quart of gear lube. Lots of pumps to get it to prime the 1st time but it worked great.

Still, what synthetic to use on the truck?

Any synthetic ATF will do for your powersteering as long as it is Mercon rated.

Of coarse I use Amsoil in mine

make your own pump with a old fish pump run it off the car battery pump out the old
if your fluid is really black and the pump is yelling real loud check your rack and pinion you can flush that system out as much as you want but if the rack and pinion is worn then youll never get it to stop squeling
