I put 49000+ miles on a 99/XL/4.2v6/SC/auto with 331 gears, my overall average was 17mpg with 65/35 hiway/city driving. High was 19.8 with a tail wind, low was 13.2 with a headwind.

I now have a 01 SCrew 4.6 that is getting 17.58 for the 1st 4 fills.

The V8 suits my style of driving better than the V6 did as evidenced by the mpg.

Do you need the 5.4L power? I went with the 4.6L for economy and it still has enough muscle to pull my camper and boat. I did however go with a little lower gearing in the rear-end.

I had a similar "Love Attraction" to a truck with a 5.4L. The dealer did a locator search and found the same truck with the 4.6L and the lower rear-end.

I "split the baby" and got a little of both !

Cool

I get about 14 mpg overall. But that is a 4x4. You should hit 17-18 on the hiway.

Anybody have a 4.6L Excab. 4x4 with auto tranny? If you do, what kind of mileage do you get? I would like to know because I'm planning on getting one.

Question Fuel Economy

I'm very seriously looking at a 2001 F150 HD special. God that's a beautiful truck. Only thing that concerns me is paying dearly for that 5.4 V8 at the gas pump as I drive 65 miles per day min. to work. My little V6 Dakota gets 22 to 23 real consistent. I'd hope that V8 would return 18 on the highway at 70+ with the AC on. What have some of you experienced? I can only really find any info on the Ford V6 guys and they aren't too happy at 17 or 18.

I have a 98 Supercab 4X4 with the 4.6 and I get about 15 mpg around town and 18 mpg on the highway. My wife has a 99 Expedition 4X4 with the 4.6 and gets 14 mpg around town and 17 mpg on the highway. I just bought a SuperCrew 4X4 with the 5.4, and the couple of tanks I have checked have been around 15 mpg.

Does it sound like I have too many trucks? The 98 is for sale, check out the link at the bottom of my signature.

i get between 13-14mpg with my f-150 5.4l auto off road 17" tires no matter what type of driving. ive never seen where what type of driving makes a big difference in gas mileage. ive never payed attention to gas mileage till i got my previous truck, a 98 ranger. it consistently got 22mpg. no matter what i drive all expy to work (used to be 62miles) my new job is only 22 miles.

What I did was mentaly add $50 to $100 to my monthly payment to account for the extra gas. I traded from a 1999 Mustang GT, so the decrease was not that bad, about 19 MPG hi-way to about 16.5 MPG. Bottom line is, these trucks are big, and fuel economy and the trucks just don't go together.

Well my 4.6 gets around 17 to 18 highway cruiseing at 70so I would say a 5.4 would get a little less than that.
