My Baby Has Piston Slap!!!!
OH NO!!! It can't be true!!!!
Yeah, but apparently, it is....my 5.4 has some noise when accel cold when outside temps are below about 50 and it has been sitting all night. After it warms up it is nice and quiet (about 2 miles of driving).
The dlr origionally put on a new serpentine belt and idler but it still is making the noise. They told me yup it's pistion slap, not to worry about it.....and they seemed pretty well informed about it.
From all the reading I've done here about it for the last two years there doesnt seem to be catastrophic engine failure due to it (except possibly for a rare instance). Seems to be more problems with the replacements esp the FQR's and problems related to the transplant process (messed up hoses, wires, scratches, etc) than due to PS itself.
so, something to live with---at least it ain't a leaker and runs fine and I am thankfull for that!!!!

karl,
My babys been slapping for 114,500 plus miles. Don't read much about the 4.6L slappers but they are out there. I agree. No one has posted a slapper with a rod, piston or crank problem. ??? From what I am told high silicon pistons act like forged pistons and expand when they warm up.
You get rid of your slapper then install forged pistons??? SLAP-SLAP-SLAP.
I take it real easy when it is cold and this is probably why it is still alive after 114,500+ hard miles.
Have fun...

Uh...Karl, better fix that sig...
After a few years that sig may read:
OK, she's a leaker, a slapper, a pirate, a poet,
I know the game
she's been up and down and over and under
it's all the same
each time I find myself
with the hood up, over my face
I pick myself up and get back in the race....
