Under Drive Pulleys
#16
Thanks for the scoop Aaron. I have seen people talk about the alternator speed differences and assumed they were comparing to stock rather than the three piece set actually having a larger alternator pulley such as your case.
My truck is a '95 and it seems that with the smaller pulley things slow down at high load at idle. I considered leaving the larger stocker on but haven't tried it yet. Seems the alt would be the least drag of all the accessories, so why push it....
Don't know if the trucks would tolerate the amount of underdrive the 'Stangs would. I have seen some real small crank pulleys on the cars.

Hmmm.... If you have a '95, I am guessing you have a 302 or 351. If thats the case I'm not sure if I would advise you to mess with pulleys. I know with the 'stangs, the 5.0s sometimes ran into charging problems with UDs. Though the new modular engines don't seem to be affected with them to that degree. Something for you to look into anyhow.
I'm not sure if I am miss reading you but I think you might have something confused.....
A larger pulley will slow the alt. rpm down
A smaller pulley will increase alt. rpm.
As for the pull on an alternator, it may be the least drag of everything but I'm sure it turns harder than you might think if it is loaded.

The '95 is a 302 and the pulley set is the three piece 'Stang set from FRPP. This set has the smaller alt pulley and charging is still borderline at idle with accessories running. I've had them about 2-2 1/2 years now.
As for the charging I think using the stock (larger) alt pulley would be out of the question for anyone doing much in town driving.
As for the pulley sizes I think the confusion came in when talking about the two piece charging better than the three piece. I assumed all the three piece sets had a smaller alt pulley than stock so would charge better than a two piece set using the same main and water pump pulleys.
As for how much the alt pulls hard to say. I remember some of the 'Stang guys short belting around the PS pump were claiming 4-5 hp gain. Don't think I've even seen anything to really show what and alt takes to drive.
