re-setting computer?

re-setting computer?
My first post!!!
I have read thru a lot of the messages here and have to say it is a great website. Read a few about "re-setting the computer" by disconnecting the battery. What exactly does this accomplish and why do it?
I ask because sometimes after I start my truck it will idle smooth for a few seconds and then start to idle rough until I put it in gear and take off.

a lot of people do it because they have installed a new performance chip in the computer and want to drain old instuctions out which makes it accept the new instuctions faster.
on the other idle problem you got me it could be alot of things. it doesn't sound like that big a problem. i have a new f-150 with only 1100 miles on it and it does the same thing sometimes until it warms up.

I have a 97 F150 4X4, 4.6l 36,500 mile with the rough idle. very intermitent. My 01 Expedition has a 4.6l and idles smooth...
