Question When to trade??

I got a 98 4.6 ext cab 4x2 that has 90,000 miles. Paid for. I drive 30-40k a year and gov allows .325 per mile ($9750 yr.). Truck is perfect cond. with no problems. Would you trade with 100k coming up or drive till wheels fall off. Seems like trade-in/resale really drops off after 100k. Would like some opinions on this. Truck has been well maintained and would go 200k with no problem.

They're right about Kelly Blue Book online being a good reflection of what to expect a dealer to give you as a trade-in value. My Ford dealer actually has online computers in the showroom to look up various resources such as KBB, Ford's site, Ford Credit, etc. We pulled up my 1998 Mustang, wholesale and retail. Of course I was offered the wholesale ammount right off the bat. I expected this because I use the Z plan, so there is no way to "hide" an inflated trade in ammount. We looked up both wholesale and retail, and found a happy medium.. (closer to wholesale than I would have liked, but a better deal than if I'd have just folded for wholesale)

I would keep it till the tires fell off. If you maintained it well that is. Also how important is it to have all the latest features.
I kept my 90 5.0 mustang for 10 years until someone stole it (grumble).

What i'm really tryng to determine is right now its probably worth 12000 or less. i havn't looked it up just aprox. i would have to pay additional 10,000 to get new one. the truck looks brand new inside and out. i park it in garage and work from home not one door ding. if i drive it 3 more years its got 180,000 miles on it. what is a 6 year old truck with 180,000 miles worth. of course i would have about $10,000 set aside form mileage money. i probably should be asking some financial or economic person.

Remember that is 180,000 mile on the truck the whole truck, gears, engine, front end, rear end. That is a lot. For 6 years old truck, dont expect a lot of money for it. A dealer would probley give you around $6000- $8000 for it, but he would some how tack it to you on a new one. But there is a tax brake to, the trade in would lower the tax on the new one too. Say if you paid $20,000 for a new truck and they give you $8,000 for the trade in. Now you would be paying $12,000 taxable on the new one. Good Luck

Thumbs up

If you're reaching 100k, keep it. Trade won't be much. It would be a wholesale piece to a dealer.

You know what condition it's really in. You could sell it for more. Or, keep it as a hauler.
