ok i know this isnt under the right category but i need help here quick... ok here goes the other day im on my way to work and this guy in a 92 camaro hits his gas and starts to pull out of my neighborhood i pull up and he slams on his brakes and he can obviously stop quicker than i can so i hit the rear of his car...damage on mine was none but his rear bumper is scratched...we exchanged numbers and he calls me today and says the estimate was 490 that covers sanding the paint off and painting it and clear coat and all...is this price way out there cause it seems like it to me i think this is bs to have to pay this for a 10 year old car that has an added scratch to it... anyways we didnt file a police report so if i think hes ripping me off am i even required to pay him at all?

tell him you want to see it and two more in writting or go to a local shop you or a friend know about and ask them if they would be willing to take a look at it and get the guy to bring it to the shop. if it,s cheaper whip out the ol check book and deal with him face to face, if it,s more tell him you want one more

You need photos dude!!
For all you know he could reverse his piece of crap car into a tree or wall and then call the cops that you hit him.
Expect the worst. Cover your a$$!
I'd try to get two more estimates for the body work. Sounds kinda steep for a couple scratches. Those are plastic bumper skins on those things anyway. Might find one at a wrecker, ja never know.
It's almost best to keep a disposable cheapo one-use camera in the glove box for things like that.
Perhaps you should of just put it in low-range 4x4 and floored it and accordioned his car between you and the next telephone pole, then get out and smash in his pumpkin with your tire iron. Sometimes that crosses my mind when the road rage gets to me.
Never mind.

Well first thing you need to do is buy yourself a gun for protection. Then change your name, and move to a different house. That should keep him from finding you. Also, check the front of your truck to see if any of his paint is on it. Clean that off with some Acetone and you should be fine. It never happened

I can't believe you people that are telling him to deny that this ever happened. That is sooooo very wrong. If you rear ended him then it's your fault and most importantly, you have a moral responsability here to pay for the damage. Unless of course he slammed on his brakes to mess with you. Then, as an American, you have an obligation to kick his mother f&*king a$$.
The estimate does seem a bit high though. If his car is rusting and in generally poor condition, you don't have a legal obligation to give him a new paint job. Only to restore it to pre-accident condition.
In Minnesota, police will not respond to an accident unless there is an injury or some impending danger, such as a vehicle blocking traffic.
I always carry a camera in my truck and I have used it too. I was once getting gas, when the car behind me rolled forward and lodged itself under my rear bumper. This happened because the driver didn't put it in gear. When he came out after paying, he just looked at his car sort of confused. Then he looked at me as though I was going to hurt him. I felt bad for the guy because this little mistake was going to cost him money to repair and he had a child strapped into the back seat. I told him to leave it there while I took some pictures. The pictures are actually kind of funny because his little car is about 10 inches under my rear bumper and there's one photo with the guy just standing there, scratching his head Nothing at all happened to my truck but his hood was scratched and dented.
I'd say only pay for the damage you caused. If he tries for anything more, then you really need to tell him to take you to court so a judge can decide the facts.
If you deny everything, it doesn't really have any bearing on my life, but how would you feel if someone damaged your truck and got away with it???

Here in california with the "hispanic" population this is a large problem that is never spoken about. You come behind a car and the person in front of you with a semi *****ty ride will purposely slam on the brakes for you to hit them, then charge exhorbitant rates. Its really a scam.
Bottom line, tell him you want 3 different estimates and if he doesnt like it, tell him "lets see a judge"

So rear end accidents problems are exclusive to the Hispanics? Yeah right!
Regardless you rear ended him so its your fault --well at least that how it is in Ca.
Drive defensively and watch your distance !!! Body shops get $85.00 per hour out this way.

FWIW I had a very minor scratch or indent put on the front bumper cover of my 00 mustang before I got rid of it. Some lady backed into it doing about 1 mph. Damage was very minor. Her insurance paid me $820.00 to replace and paint the bumper cover. I took it to a local body shop and they quoted me $450.00 to fix it. Sounds like he is giving a fair price to fix it. Of course he will probably do like me and never have it fixed and just pocket the money.

But these days you can be sued for anything and by anyone of any race. Pay the money and get a receipt before they get Jesse Jackson involved.
