When we bought our expy new 9-1-00,we were getting 12.7!! After a few mods and 6000 miles we're getting 13.3! Right after I installed the Gibson exhaust it went as high as 14.8 (this is all in town, stop and go traffic) I guess 13.3 is where its gonna stay, it aint budged from that in 2 weeks.

Hell no, this 5.4 just loves gas!
I had the 4.6 in my 98sc, it was much easier on the wallet.

Thumbs up

I own a 2001XLT SuperCab with a 5.4L. I have averaged in mixed driving about 15.86mpg. On my first long trip I averaged 19.2mpg. The truck has only 1700 miles. I drive with tailgate up and have no tonneau cover, yet.

I,ve owned 3 Triton powered F150's.........

'97 Regular cab long bed 4x2 w/ 4.6 & 5 speed got an average of about 16 mpg.

'99 Regular cab long bed 4x4 Lariat w/ 5.4 Auto ( of course ) got 13-13.5 mpg. That motor was a piston slappin' pig. Good riddance.

'01 SC short bed 4x4 ORP Lariat w/ 5.4 and only 1100 miles has been at about 14 mpg and this includes towing a 3000 lb. boat several times already ( I'm addicted to fishing! ).
These numbers are encouraging, as this truck weighs quite a bit more that both previous trucks. This motor also feels stronger than the last 5.4 ( and quieter! )

Oh yeah, the 4.6 had a Hypertech chip.
Both 5.4 Superchipped

Question

I found an interesting chart on the epa site showing an f150 w/5.4 engine gets worse mileage on premiun gas . http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm
I wonder why this is, of course these tests are performed on stock trucks. I tried using premium for a while after a tank or so my mileage went up 1 mpg then the winterized fuel hit the market and it went right back down. Just some fuel for the fire.

I have a 5.4L with 3000 miles and a superchip.
I get 15.5 mpg, used to get about 14 mpg.
With the chip I also have better shifting and
power. Not a great difference but definately a Plus.

FQR 5.4 4x4 w/ 3.73 - just filled up, 15.86 mpg city/country/hwy(85mph). The FQR has consistantly gone up in mpg to where I always get 14-16. Not bad considering the way I drive...but I have taken it easy on some tanks and haven't noticed any increase.

Usually 14 MPG, but last couple of tanks were about 12 MPG (winter). This is 95% city driving.

Long term average now over 4+ years is right at 17mpg. Worst gas mileage to date was about 11.7 mpg (-30 degree city driving stinks!). Best tank was up around 23 mpg. My setup gets its best gas mileage around 70 to 72 miles an hour (so long as there isn't a significant headwind or crosswind).

Overall my truck sees about a 50/50 mix of highway and city driving.

Sounds like my 99 S/C ORP is averageing about the same as most of the 4x4 S/C that are on here. 14mpg or so, which I drive both city/highway roads to work.

My pick-up averages 14-15 mpg including city and highway driving. The only modifications that I have put on it are K&N filter and a fiberglass topper. The best has been 18.5 mpg, this was on a trip to Milwaukee, I had to fill up on my way home, west of Madison. I averaged 65mph and never had to drive against the wind.

I owned a 1999 F-150, equipped the same, but with a 4.6 and without the ORP. This truck was so gutless that it wouldn't maintain 75mph on the interstate in overdrive, while driving into the wind. If I tried to set the cruise at 75mph and didn't turn the OD off, it would hunt gears everytime the wind gusted or whenever it wasn't going downhill. I had to drive the length of NoDak at approx. 3400 rpm, to avoid 20 shifts per mile. I think that lower gears would have helped this truck by raising the rpms at cruising speed.

Both of these trucks averaged the same gas milage as my '92 supercub 4X2 with a 4.9 six cylinder and auto trans. All three trucks had the 3.55 rearend.

My gas mileage seems to be getting worse... It's because I've been doing almost exclusively city driving/short trips over the past few months. Also, I drive with a full toolbox all the time, and tend to flex the ol' Flowmasters a bit too much.

This is part of a spreadsheet I keep:

Price: | MPG: | Avg: | Cost/Mile

I've had my truck for nearly 6 months and 6K miles. I installed the exhaust system at 3500 and the superchip at 4100. Prior to those mods, I was averaging 13.83 with 50/50 city/hiway driving. After the mods and no changes to the amount of driving, up to this point I have averaged 14.21 mpg. I have noticed the last few tanks full that the mileage is deceasing ever so slightly. Hope this trend does not continue!!
