Post How's your milage?

I have a 97 F-150 that is in excellent condition, and I heard that the 5.4 liter tritan gets better gas milage than the 4.6 liter. Can anyone verify this? I heard that it was because it is easier for the bigger motor to pull the truck. I would like to hear anyone's input on gas milage and what they have heard.

Thumbs up

This last tank filled up got 13.4 mpgs all city. I have 1600 miles now and mileage going up very slowly. Started like 12.5 and now Im up to 13.4. So I am getting what they say for city 14mpgs. This is the best truck I have ever driven and is worth the $15 more a week than it used to be with car.

JLetson2001,

The 5.4L definitely does NOT get better mileage than the 4.6 (unless my grandmother was driving the 5.4 and one of our members was driving the 4.6 ).

I have the 5.4 and currently average 13.6 miles/gallon (vs. 12.4 when I first got it). I don't know if the increase is due to normal break-in or the mods but the recent average is pretty consistent (considering my driving habits get worse with each mod, this improvment is actually larger than it seems ).

Regards

Red face

I just got my 2001 SuperCrew 5.4 2/22/01. Mileage started out rough, about 12-13. With almost 4000 miles on the clock now, I managed 18 on a 100% highway trip, going 65 the whole way. On the way back I pumped it up to 70-75 and mileage went down to about 14-15. The only difference I can think of (other than cruising rpms) is that on the way up to NC, I had a small load of boxes that came up to the top of the bed rails. I put a tarp over the boxes and strapped it down really tight. On the way back, without a tarp over the bed, the mileage was WAY worse. Ofcourse, I did go a bit faster too. I need to get a tonneau and try to figure out where the big difference is comming from. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

i get 17 to 18.5 mpg on my 97 4.6 4x2 ext. cab. it has 116,000 miles on it. btw, mpg went up after installing the superchip. added airforce one and bbk 75mm throttle body after chip and mpg still 17-18.5. travel 75-80 miles to and from work on i-75 with some town driving. almost forgot; have f/m delta 50 muffler.

I get 22 on the hwy, and about 17 in the city - but it's a 5sp, 4.6 and a short box reg cab. Much lighter than the supercabs. And, i am pretty good and not getting up off the line too quickly, which i think makes the biggest difference of all.

My 4.6 5-speed gets 16-17 mpg and I beat the snot out of it. I'm at WOT over 4,000 rpm at least 15 times a day.

Around 15 mpg 60 miles round trip everyday (50% country/50% highway). I've found that I can maintain this up to 69 mph, after that it goes downhill. Just my $.02.

Last fill I went 405km or 253miles on 77L or 20.34Gal, all city driving in the winter, which averages out to 12.44mpg. Man that sucks!! On nice days I can stretch it out to maybe 435-440km on 80L, which is about 13mpg. God that still sucks!! I thought it was a little better then that! Time for the performance exhaust system.

I've filled up 31 times now since I got my truck on 04/24/00. My running average is 13.02mpg and it's been improving over the months. My last tank was 13.80mpg after using BG44K. I use the a/c a lot, get stuck in traffic both to and from work, and often do 75mph when the road is clear. Not bad considering mine's a 4x4 with an automatic.

My mileage stayed about the same since new (13K now with Mobil 1) I get, in Massachusetts, the following:
* ~12-14 all city (summer)
* ~9-11 all city (winter)
* ~2 mpg or so higher summer and winter for mixed highway/city.
* ~17.8 total highway trip, round trip=840 miles(spring, 50-60 degrees or so)

I have kept records since new, but haven't stopped to figure out any long-term averages. The mileage is bad enough that I guess I lost interest and just make sure I've gone to the bank before filling up!
I do let the truck warm up several minutes or more on remote start in winter which kills mileage and never have taken a long total highway trip in the winter. Also I have autolamp and I've blocked the sensor so the lights are always on for safety (Eastern Mass has some of the WORST drivers!)
