Post Just got a K&N air filter

I just got a K&N air filter for my 4.6. I haven't installed it yet, but I hope its good. I know it lets more air pass, but does it let more dirt in too?

I think it does let in more dirt. Compare the two of them side by side and you will see that the K&N has a flat face while the original equipment is kinda bulbous so it fits in the fresh air intake duct. The air passes thru this filter while the incoming air flows around the K&N, that's how they can claim less restrictive. I believe that the original equipment does a better job of filtering the air. The K&N would be superior if it were shaped just like the original. Hey just my observation.

Actually they clean the air better. The oiled cotton gauze picks more crud out of the air while allowing more air to flow through smoother.

i just put a K and N in my expy. it lets alot more air in cause it is cone and not cylender shaped. also the filter works better as it traps dirt. after the oil clings to dirt, the dirt filters out more dirt.

Just to let you know this did help... ALOT!
My throttle response and especially freeway throttle were fantastic after i did this!
The best thing about this is was it was free, and the gains were better than i could have ever expected!
Below are some pictures of my truck and how i did it.
If you have any more questions lemme know!

King james,

Its really simple, you take out the elbow silencer restricting airflow and then just take a piece of sheet metal and cut it out in the filters place. Put the strap clamp on and bingo! I used twist ties just as a temporary solutions to hold it still but im going to go to a junk yard and get an old housing from the air filter! Then im going to use a band saw and cut just barely around the edge where it encases the filter put the rubber feet in and bingo! After that it will be perfectly still "it is already though" and have a much better finish. This is an alternative to a FIPK kit. Of course those FIPK kits are much better this is FREE and i dont drive a SPORTY truck just a cruzer so i couldnt be happier with the results.

Moose,

Thumbs up

Whitengray,
Thanks for the info. The part # is listed for a 2000 model. I assume that the air filter housing is the same as the 2001. since that is the one you are using. again thanks for the info.

Hey Chicago-Guy,
Checked K&N website; 4.6 and 5.4 use the same filter. Search was for 2001 model year.
You can buy it online here at the f-150 online store.
