How much Stock HP in 4.6L
#2
Hi JW
98 4.6L 281CI 220HP@4500RPM 290lb.ft@3250RPM
I dont have anyother specs. AT/manual, axle ratios.
Have you read other threads. Chip bd. etc. you probably see best bang for the buck.
Superchip/cat back exhaust/K&N & others.
Done all three on my 99 SC 4.6. Made a difference in power/performance/torque.
There are other mods. also, but havent done them.
Good luck. OT

Another quick question..
I saw a reference to the 2001 4.6 that showed 231HP on a pricing spec sheet (from my ford dealer, but some site called Chrome blah blah).
Then I saw the factory sales guide (older) that said 220 for the 4.6.
Which one is right?? anyone have a 2001 and can verify one or the other?
Thanks in advance,
Devin

I would stick to air filter and exhaust mods only.
Remember with a modified chip (nothing wrong with doing this) it adjusts your ignition timing more aggresively so you'll need to run at least 89 octane instead of 87 octane. Add that up in a year and your chip mod will keep costing you extra $$ for the life of your truck. Nothing wrong with this if you have the extra cash though.
The factory air box is rather restrictive even with a K&N filter as it goes to a small diameter where it sucks air from the driver's side fender. Ideally this should be a much bigger pipe before the filter. Don't bother with the filter kits that have the filter element exposed in the engine compartment, you'll be inhaling hot "under hood" air which is less dense = less hp. If you go this route make sure to build a sheet metal or plastic box that separates the filter from the rest of the engine compartment and which recieves cold outside air either from the fender or headlight area.
I haven't done any exhaust mods yet, anyone have any opinions on the dynomax cat-back system with the ultraflow stainless muffler?
Have fun.
