In areas with 'reforumlated gas', you will probably get much worse mileage due to lower energy content in the fuel. This is different than octane.

Take 10% of the energy out of the fuel, and you'll need to use a lot more of it. Due to air quality issues, different areas are required to use different fuels. Makes it tough to make mileage comparisons between regions.

I have to admit, if I was getting crappy gas mileage I would feel the same way.

I swear I'm getting 18+.

I have managed 17-18 MPG consistently since I bought the truck on the freeway. However, in the city or lead-footin' it, I do average around 14. I've filled up, taken freeway trips for the weekend, and filled up at the same station the next day, and averaged 18. It's not out of the realm of possibility... 65-70, level terrain, cruise set most of the way... It's possible, believe me.

Best ever mileage for me was on a 300 mile trip with only one stop (shut off engine) on relatively flat terrain, cruise control set on 65. Got 20 mpg!! No B.S.

87 octane, tailgate closed, k&n filter (only mod)

WLF,

I think most times I see good reports of MPG it is mid-west and CA drivers. The gas here in the northeast really sucks. I consistently get 12-13 mpg. That's 95% city driving. Being from Baltimore maybe that's part of your problem too.
I just decided to change brands, running my first tank of Texaco now. We'll see if there's a difference.

well i hope you guys are right on higher mileage cause the first three tanks i've got have been 12.9--13.1--13.1 fourth tank fill up today at 1738 miles--hope after break in will get better
I wouldn't count on it. I'm almost at 10K with my '00 5.4L 4x4 auto and I average 13.06 mpg. My best ever was 13.95 mpg. Here in Hawaii 87 octane gas is $1.92/gallon so I try to drive my '95 Tbird SC (19mpg) as much as possible.

The absolute best I have ever gotten was 18.8. The worst is 12. Gas mileage sucks with the 5.4, but you have to know that and accept it if you want the power and torque that comes with a V-8. Even after installing the K&N air filter and the cat-back duals, fuel mileage never even changed.

DrJeffro,
The gas does suck here (oxiginated in the winter) and I already use Texaco. Have also used Shell, Amaco and Exxon. Have also driven my truck Coast to Coast during my 90,000+ miles, both towing and not. Still have not averged more then 15 mpg. Some times a little more ad sometimes a little less.

RebelYell,
I agree, I love the power. Love the truck, and woulden't trade it for any high milage car out there (except maybe a Porsch Boxter).

With a 25 gallon fuel tank, if I get 400 miles a tank, I'm overjoyed. In the winter, it's more like 340.

The only way anyone is getting more than 18 mpg w/ the 5.4 is on the back of a flatbed!

I'm consistant @14mpg w/ very conservative driving.

well, I envy those who get more than 13 miles to a gallon. Check my sig( I am talking about my F150 ), I get about 12.7 miles per gallon 100% city driving. The good news is, even if I "race" my truck all the time (leadfootitis), I still get about 12.7 MPG. My truck only has 4000 miles and I am hoping that a couple thousand more, I should see better gas mileage. Yes, I drove VERY conservatively for a full tank only to get the same mileage. So , since then I just enjoy my truck. By the way, gas here is about 1.86 per gallon (92 octane). Hope this helps and if anybody has any idea why I only get about 280 miles before the low fuel light comes on and my friend who has a 2000 5.4 expedition with about the same mods (4x2, 5.4, 3.55 LS) and gets 360-400 miles per tank, please let me know. Thanks.

Best city I've got is 12.9 and that's when I wasn't driving like I'm racing all the time. The best highway I got is 15.6 @ 75mph.

Future mods: Supercharger, headers, NOS, tranny upgrade(heavy duty gears, clutch packs, etc.), performance torque converter, composite driveshaft, bore cylinders 30 over, new pistons, crank, and rods, get performance heads or port the ones I have, gauges for the a-pillar, new L if they still make them and I like the way it looks, and a Z06 Vette or BMW Z3.

The best mileage I've had is 21 mpg and worst about 14 mpg (19' boat and 6 people in the truck). This is on an imperial gallon though (Canada). Imperial is 4.55 litres and American is 3.78 Litres so that's about 17.5 mpg HWY and 11.6 worst.

To get high mileage you have to keep your foot light and smooth, stick to the speed limit, and keep your shifts smooth and below 2000-2500rpm.

I generally get around 14 mpg (US gallon)average and drive fairly aggresively. This is about 75% hwy driving.

Only mods I have is K&N filter, Mobil1 Synthetic 5w30. Stock 4.6 auto, 3.55 rear, 4x4, S/Cab, 17" factory rims and tires.

Remember people... these are big trucks and it takes gas to move'em. Sure, a Tundra may get better gas mileage but it has 25% less fat.

I had great fun in my old Toyota 4x4 but if I put just one load of dirt in the back the springs were on the bump stops.
