???19 MPG WITH 5.4L ??? THATS BULL!!!

I don't know what some of you guys are doing to your trucks but DAMN!! I'm getting about 300 miles or so out of a about 23 gallons. I let it go to "E" but never lower and fill up with about 23 or 23.5 gallons in a 25 gallon tank.
My last truck (see sig) was a 4.2 with a 30 gallon tank and I got about 380 miles to the tank. All city driving. Highway was slightly higher at about 14 MPG's. I took off the stock 235/75X16's and put on BStone Duelers @ 265/70x16's and lost 80 miles a tank. I never figured the difference with the size but it couldn't have gotten better!
I have tested the new truck (5.4) with and without the cover and only a .5 to 1 mpg difference. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I wish I was getting 15 or 16mpg's!!!

Well guys I've been getting between 15-17 mpgs per gallon, mixed highway and city driving.I've been using Texaco 93 octane. As its only $1.70 here.Hey Otterbob how is that Yamaha Raptor you have.I was at my Yamaha dealer and I wanted to get one but I was undecided between that and a waverunner.Give me some details on how your experience with the Raptor has been. And if you don't mind can you tell for how much did you get it.Thanks.

I have a supercrew 5.4 I bought it 7/15/2000.
When it had 2000 miles on it I tried to see how high of milage I could get on a fill up.The weather was still warm and all tires 17" had 35lbs of pressure with 80% city driving.I should tell you I can squease a gallon of gas...Well I got 17.8 miles to the gallon.
Then winter came I tried the same proceedure the only difference was cold weather and the front tires had 32lbs pressure I got 11.8 miles to the gallon.
Now its 5/9/01 tried again and got 17.2.
I never have tried all highway at 65mph but wouldn't be suprized if I got between 18-19 mpg.

It has been my experience that the new f150s (1999 and above) will acheive their best performance and fuel mileage on 87 octane.
My 99 4.6l got around 13 to 14 miles per gallon when I ran 90+ octane through it. When I started using 87 it consistantly got 16 - 17 miles per gallon.
I now have a 2001 5.4l and on my last tank full I got 15.4 on 87 octane.
My experience says 87 octane will you give the best performance and mileage. However, others have seen better performance and mileage on 89 or better octane. So I guess there are no hard fast rules about what will get you the best gas mileage. You just have to find out what works best for your truck because they all seem to have their own personality when it comes to performance and mileage.
I do believe the 5.4 is fully capable of acheiving 18 mpg or better under ideal conditions. Even though it is a larger displacement engine, you just don't have to work it as hard because of the amount of torque it has at low rpm.

Well, it's about that time for that first fill-up. I purchased my F150 Supercrew HDS this past Saturday, and logged about 310 miles so far. Needle is hovering a bit over E so there may be a fe more gulps left in the tank. I guess I'll know when I fill up. As is, it's not looking too good. I really didn't gun the engine (much) and kept the speed fairly low (between 65-75MPH). Most of this was highway, or highway-like condition, so I'm a bit concerned. I plan on driving to Savannah, GA this weekend for some sustained highway driving, so I should be able to gauge the highway milage. I hope it's much better... I also plan on driving to Miami (from Atlanta) end of May and we'll see what the milage is then...
But all that aside, the truck is a pleasure to drive. Good thing Georgia's gas price has so far stayed below the national average. I can get 87 octane gas at around $1.43.

Best 16.269 mpg.
Worst 15.01 mpg.
Mostly highway to work.
Mine is a 2WD with less than 3000 miles.
Overall I am happy with that. Not bad for a 5.4 in my mind. It may be possible to get better than 19 on all highway non stop type trips with a 2WD but probably not a 4x4.

If you feel you are getting really low numbers check a few things I did. Until recently I didn't bother too much with my mileage(a '97 5.4L). But I knew the time or two I did check it was @12-14mpg. Recently began checking every fill up-11mpg no matter how I drove. Cleaned battery posts and reset computer, changed fuell filter and oil/filter. No help. Decidede to check my K&N. Really dirty so I serviced it. The past 4 tankfulls have averaged 15mpg! That was with a/c on everyday with mixed driving. One whole tank I had strictly a/c on with highway driving and got 18.2mpg. So check the little things and you might find some better mileage lurking under the hood. By the way, my dad has a '97 with the 4.6L and consistantly gets 20-22mpg.

I get 20-23 on the highway with the 4.6 and the 5 speed with 3.08 gears, its not high performance but i works for me. I can still get around most and go over those who choose not to move. hehe.

yeah, I would like to know that. I call bullsheot here!
If you are getting 18mpg, that means that a full tank of gas (25 gallons on a xtra cab) would be at 450 miles. I have not seen anyone say they get that many miles on a tank.
do the math. 400 miles on 25 gallons is 16mpg.
Let here the milage, the gears, the tires and the speedo calculations/corrections you have

While not a 5.4, but a 4.6l, 2wd, with 3:08's and an auto tranny, I have hit 450+ miles one tank of gas many times. Want proof? Check the mileage from Minneapolis to Denver - roughly 920 miles or so (depending on where you measure from). I routinely make the trip on one stop for gas, usually in the Lincoln, Nebraska area westward. 2 full tanks (usually 22 gallons or so) = 44 gallons. That equals roughly 21 mpg. While not a 5.4 - 450 miles on a tank is very possible and some of us do it routinely. Sure, I don't have all the off the line oomph or super dooper trailer towing capabilities, but this setup sure gives me nice mileage - even at a steady 70-75 mph!
No experience or comments on the 5.4 models though - haven't owned one and won;t say a word. Just though you might like to see what a 4.6lcan do!

Well, I've been checking my HD pretty closely the first 1600 miles. I've been driving a little lite since it's new and keeping it at or under 70 but first tank was 18mpg and the second was 380 miles, 20.7 gallons (18.3). This is a mix of probably 66% highway, 33% city. I can't complain. I haven't done any mods yet either.
