Unhappy 2001 lightning 330 inch W/lower end knock

Dear sir,
I purchaced a new 2001 L on 4/23/01, that had an engine knock the day i took delivery. Now at 6300 miles and three oil changes the knock continues to be, but not any worse. Did I mention that the knock does not ever stop! In different words, the knock is present all the time at idle. I had a 2000 Lightning before the '01 and the engine NEVER EVER knocked even when cold. I do have the extended warrantee and I'm pondering going for the engine replacement before she blows. Only problem I can see, is that the service manager will prolly laugh at me when I ask for a new engine. Also, I use the 5w20 Motorcraft oil against my better judgement. This oil seems to thin to me!

Oh well, I wanted to add to your post...

Thank you !

The post is very informative and explains the slight tick I get on a cold start in my Windsor engine. However the url for the TSB is broken.

Piston Slap in 2000 5.4

First let me thank you for your very informative post.
I have a 2000 F150 with the 5.4 liter engine. I purchased
it in July of 2000 and the first winter in MD I experienced
a severe knocking noise and vibration in the engine upon
starting it up after a cold night. This happened approx. three times in the past two years. I have 27,000 miles and am now
in Atlanta. It has happened only once since moving down here
and it wasn't as severe as my previous experiences. I run Mobile
1 5W 30 exclusively in my truck. It sure seems like what I experienced was piston slap, but it hasn't happened in a while, and I wonder how I should approach this with Ford. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sincerely

Perryr

Question

Hi,I thought that I was the only one with this problem. My recently bought Expedition has 84,000 miles on it.I called several dealers and only one told me it was no big deal. One told me I need to clean my fuel injectors.DUH!
Anyway do I have a leg to stand on considering the mileage?Does Mobil one help?
Should Ford not be required to do a Recall?
Thanks fellow sufferers.

65K + miles.. anyone recently get a motor swap

I haven't seen many new post to this thread. Has there been anyone getting an engine swap from Ford lately?

I have only recently learned of this and have a '98 F150 5.4 with over 65K miles on it.. I will start trying with the dealer.

Thanks,
Tony.

I brought the truck in 4 months ago for the 3rd time, and they still deny hearing anything. So I went down there in the morning to show them what I'm hearing. They just keep saying that the amount of knocking heard is normal, and that Ford is only replacing 5.4s with a severe knock. My truck only has 50,000kms on it so far, so I'm just going to wait it out till it gets worse.

Angry Piston Slap

I have a 2001 F 150 Supercrew with 5.4. I have had PS since new and have reduced it to an acceptable level by using Mobil One. I did not report this to the dealer when the truck was under warranty, (40K Miles Now) because several friends of mine had '99 and '98 Models with PS. I was led to beleive this was normal and nothing to be concerned about. I am posting this because I read that 2000 and later models have been modified. Not true! I am pelased with this truck. Using the synthetic oil and a K&N Filter, I routinely get 17 MPG driving 80 MPH. I could use more torque at low RPM if you have any ideas. The Diablo Chip seems a bit anemic for the effort (18 H.P. , 22 Ft. Lbs.), so I hope you have another idea. Thanks for the great posting. Dave

Hello all, great board. I wish I would have found this earlier. I have a 97 5.4 with 92,000 and I have had the slap since at least 60,000 and maybe earlier. When I bought the truck I hade 4,000 on the original warranty and I got an extended to 75,000--wish I would have gone to 100,000 now. the truck was built late in the model year in feb. My main question is 1. Do I have any hope in getting a new engine and 2. after reading some posts do I even want to mess with getting a new one if mine will run good. At first I, like many others, figured it was just thick oil or maybe at the worst lifters going bad. My main problem is that I live in Wyoming and the truck gets started in -20 weather sometimes--that is really a bad noise and I get a weird whine when it is that cold as well--I think it is a pulley that is frozen but havent looked--it only lasts about 10-15 sec. But the PS lasts for5minutes or more when it is cold. If I stay below 2,000 rpm (if I need to get in and go somewhere in a hurry) it doesnt seem to be as bad in the first 5 minutes. Now I try to always let it warm up for a good 5 minutes before I start moving. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks to all

Thumbs up My 2001 now has a Reman engine!!

Hello All!
I just now have 600 miles on my new Reman engine. Looking at the engine while in the crate....It appeared like brand new! ? (Build date of engine - 4/17/2002)

I don't quite understand the "Reman" tag if the power plant is new. The service manager tried to explain to me how this engine came from the plant, then was shipped to an alliance rebuilder, then sent to the dealer where it was ultimately installed...

I know for sure that this replacement engine is VERY VERY strong, running soooo much better than the "Marbles in the paint can" original engine

Are these bad boy's actually new...anyone know for sure??

Re: 65K + miles.. anyone recently get a motor swap

Any luck on getting a replacement? I have a '98 F250 LD with 66,000 and also have the dreaded cold weather knock. It's really bad in the winter.

Thanks.

Exclamation Piston Slap

Has anyone ever had a 4.2 EFI-OHV 6 cylinder with a PS Problem?

I had a motor replaced in my 97 f150 over a year ago. It just started overheating AGAIN. I just had the cooling system flushed and a new thermostat replaced because Ford said it was sticking and now its still getting hot in warm weather and gets hot fast while going up hills???

HELP!!

piston slap

i Have a 2001 f-150 with the 5.4l in it and i also have piston slap. It has been to the dealer 3times for the noise and they say that it is piston slap but is nothing they will do for me. They gave me a 75000 mile warranty but i would still like this annying sound fixed. all 3 of the dealers that i took it to said that it is the loudest they ever heard. Does anybody know what i can do to get them to fix it.

Thanks

Take it to another dealer. I took mine to 3 dealers before the one replaced the engine. However 20,000 miles later, my new engine has developed pistonslap as well.

Lightbulb PISTON SLAP

THAT WAS GREAT INFORMATION, IF I HAD ONLY FOUND THIS WEB SITE SOONER. I JUST TRADED MY '98 F150 XLT (4.6L) THIS PAST SATURDAY, FOR F150 SUPERCREW XLT (5.4L). I HAD THE PISTON SLAP FOR 2 YEARS! NOBODY COULD TELL ME WHAT WAS HAPPENING. ALWAYS RAN GREAT, BUT WAS CONCERNING!!!!!

NOW, DO I NEED TO BE WORRIED ABOUT BLOWING OUT A SPARK PLUG IN MY 5.4L ?

GREAT WEB SITE!

MICHEAL
