And here I figured I was the only one. I just did this today. Broke 2 of the strap type wrenches, collapsed the filter, made a mess and lost a hammer in a tree! I was not having fun.

Funny, i dropped my oil last night, and again was able to get the filter off with my hands. Wonder if maybe that is becuase I have the remote oil filter up under my left hand headlamp.

Perhaps it's the ones that are on the block that people are having trouble removing.

bambino - It's the very FIRST oil filter removal we had problems with. The one that came from the factory. After that one, it's usually not a problem.

Question: What mileage did you do your first
oil change? I have a 2001 5.4 and I have always changed oil at 3k. I saw in my owner manual they recommend 5k. What say you?

OMG...went to do the first oil change on my Screw this weekend, and i'm thinking Ford must have used an impact wrench to put on the oil filter! For the life of me i couldn't get it off until i took a screw driver and punched it through filter to get some torque. It took about 3/4 of a turn before it even began to be loose! I was exhausted after wrestling with that stupid thing. Good luck.

Question First filter after FQR engine

Has anyone changed their oil after having an FQR engine replacement? The first one I mean. I had heard that the first ones were tough but I've had enough of paying $60 for a synthetic oil change.

I've changed the oil in every vehicle I've ever owned, and this has got to be the poorest location I've seen. I understand that its tight under there b/c of the four wheel drive gear, but my previous Z71 was a breeze compared with what I saw today. I tried getting a strap wrench in the only opening around the filter and there was no way it would fit. This definitely won't be something I can chance after work now. Guess it'll have to wait until this weekend....

I have a metal strap wrench that cams over and then it pivots 90 degree's, this works.....Yes they are on tight.....I dont think the screwdriver trick is recomended,,,when it starts tearing the can ,,you can then really get in trouble....Also have the 20" channel locks which will take any filter off...I use them on the diesel to tighten the filter...

Check this you think these are tight...on the PSD you have to tighten the oil filter for a turn and a half from contact,,,you have to use channel locks to tighten it that tight.....

Use the Mobil 1 filter and synthetic and extend out to 6000 miles

Next stop 7000 miles and an analysis...

Mine TOO

I took my 99 to jif lube and the gorilla works there. I changed the oil myself the next time and after going through the screwdriver and cussing thing I finally got it loose. They will not get my biz again.

Lmao @ this thread. Just changed the oil for the first time and took 3 full turns to break the seal on it. Thank God for the "BigAzz" channellocks I bought at Lowe's a while back.

After reading about the filter woes, I went down to the dealer today and got my first oil change. In three months I'll see how tight they wrenched it on.

Lightbulb Cheap, effective wrench

Try this one guys...

Wrap an old belt around the oil filter and pull in the desired direction... it should work b/c the harder you pull, the tighter it grasps the filter. Plus that length on the belt multiplies torque!!! Cheap and effective!

Be safe, as always guys...

I must have the same wrench Mach1 has. It's a Lisle #53500 "swivle grip", bought locally for $6.99. I bought it after my drawer full of oil filter wenches couldn't get the "original put on by gorrillas" filter off my 4x2. The Lisle got it off with surprizingly little effort.

My take on the first-time filter removal:

1) Crank steering full right
2) Have engine warmed up
3) Use Lisle 53500 wrench

This seems to be the trick. How come every time I buy a new vehicle I have to get a new oil filter wrench? I have EIGHT of them now....

I should have read this forum before I tried to change the first oil change on the truck. The filter is located on the driver side of the engine and I can't even get the filter to turn. I went through two wrenches-the socket type and the plier type. I decided to drain the oil and and put in new oil. I'm going to wait until I hit 3k mile (its 1.5k right now) and use the free first oil change at the dealer. Do you guys think its harmful right now to keep that filter in right now and change it out when I hit 3k miles. Thaks for the suggestions
