Just can't wait until my next oil change to remove my Mobil 1 filter and see how much trouble that will be------------it has no groves for a slip on end type wrench and there is no room for a strap wrench. If Mobil 1 is so good then why make it hard to uninstall. Mine is not on tight but now I wonder if it will come loose on its own.

You aren't kidding tfratzke!! Had to do the same thing, punch a screwdriver through it.
My wife wondered why I was under a brand new truck banging with a hammer? My next surprise was moving on to her brand new ALTIMA and guess what? I think FORD and NISSAN use the same gorrilla to put on oil filters!

Sounds like you got an old-style Mobil-1 filter. The new ones (Honda & Ford F150 at least) can be taken off w/ an oil-filter socket. I don't know why the old ones were smooth - I avoided them until I could use a socket on them.

Think I'll let the dealer do it the first time on my new Scab XLT Sport.

Had a VW GTi in '84, went to do the first oil change, and same thing. Drove a screwdriver through the VW factory filter, but the filter disintegrated as I tried to torque it off. Wound up flatbedding the car back to the dealer :-)

OMG...went to do the first oil change on my Screw this weekend, and i'm thinking Ford must have used an impact wrench to put on the oil filter! For the life of me i couldn't get it off until i took a screw driver and punched it through filter to get some torque. It took about 3/4 of a turn before it even began to be loose! I was exhausted after wrestling with that stupid thing. Good luck.

Wow did that sound familure. My first oil/filter change was a nightmare. My wife came out in the garage and woundered why I was m/fing the Windsor plant that assembled my engine..I too had to drive a screw driver in to get it to break loose. It took 4 full turns before it came off the seal...What bone heads in Windsor!

What happens is the oil filter seal sticks to the block. When you are turning the oil filter to take it off the seal stays and the filter turns. the filter is turning around the seal groove in the filter . It is not so much that it is over tightened as it is the fact that the seal wasn't lubricated before it was put on. The dry seal almost glues itself to the block. Every first oil change we do is like that and I gotta tell you, that is a poor location for an oil filter on these newer F series, I have cursed Ford more than a few times! Be sure to lube the seal with clean oil or vaseline before you install it and the problem should be resolved. Yes some techs do overtighten the filter, I have cursed them out more than once also!

LMAO. My first filter change I had a neighbor and his wife run across the street. He thought the truck fell on me or something. Man was I embaressed. Same thing, MF this MF that. I could kick that filter installing Gorilla's a$$.

Since then, well I quit using Fram so I haven't crushed anymore, but the last change was removing a Motorcraft and I did it by hand. Not easy but I got it. This time it's a Mobil 1, and I have the filter wrench now just in case!

Family Ride, I dunno if you could kick the gorilla's a$$ or not, he's obviously pretty strong to put the filters on like that. On the first change after I got my truck (it was used, but it was turned in on lease, so they had taken it back to the gorilla before selling it to me) I tried the screwdriver trick, and the screwdriver ended up slicing the filter in half, because the filter broke all the way apart before it broke the seal on the engine block. I ended up with one of the really old chain-style strap wrenches to get it off, and it took me and three of my close, personal friends (at least now they are, after we had to roll around on the ground trying to get 6 hands on one strap wrench). By the way, if you use this method, set your parking brake, I'll say no more about that, but trust me. Good luck y'all!

did my first oil change this weekend. i spent most of the time trying to get the damn filter off. luckily i had on of those socket contraptions that fit over the filter and i had a 3/8" inch socket. the contraption kept slipping off. so i had to wrap some sandpaper around the filter to get a good grip. i finally had to cut a hollow pipe to get good leverage on the filter and had to get some gloves so i wouldn't scrape my knuckles. i think they put the filter on without greasing the gasket from the factory.
i think they do it on purpose to prevent it from leaking from the factory.

Ditto on the gorilla tightening the filter. I tried all 4 wrenches I own and the claw type I have worked perfect. I thought our Windstar made a mess, now it looks like the F-150 is worse.

You name it and I have it, when it come to oil filter wrenches, but I purchased the (2) belt (adjustable) wrenches made by Sears and I'll tell you they'll turn just about anything loose.
Example, had a 2.5 steel pipe with a elbow on it and it was on there tighter then the hubs of he**. I first tried this Sears rubber belt wrench and it loosen it up, it took some power, but it worked.
They advertise them on TV and have them at the stores, good tool to keep around.
Also, I'd like to get my hands on the idiots that put these oil filters on too..........
