Magnacharger!

Crash, I'm not here to **** anyone off, and I find your antics amusing lately. I still value your comments and opinions, keep swinging.
First, for Crash I'll quote myself.
" Every truck is different, different computer codes, programs ( ie. hi altitude), and operating conditions. I successfully supplied Superchips with pulse width, timing, A/F, inlet air temps, etc. from a scan tool and Dynojet data logging software. The fruits of my efforts are documented @ 20+ rwhp above and beyond Superchips "custom" Magnacharger program. Their program works OK, it's safe, but it's not optimal and safe. The program for my truck is ALOT closer to optimal, but it's for MY truck not anyone elses. Like Crash said, get the most out of your current set up before laying out the cash. I paid for a "custom" program, I wasn't happy, but Superchips worked with me (based on the info I gave them) to get a better program for MY truck. Let's remember who does the programming, Superchips (for now), not Mike Troyer. The chip is only as good as the information you can provide them with. Mike is a great resource, an avid enthusiast, and deserves the respect he gets......but he doesn't program chips (nor do I). Not everyone has the resources I do, but I am MORE THAN WILLING to help them in any way I can. A "custom" chip will do for most, but unless you have someone do a chip on site, you'll have to live with knowing there is more to be had."
Now lets see, an FMU (or CFR as Magnacharger calls it) is just a band-aid for proper fuel management. They work, crudely, but given a choice (this includes Chris W. @ Magnacharger) they would use bigger injectors, a chip, and stock fuel pressure with the stock 1:1 regulator. Not ready for this route quite yet, I chose to take fuel out early, the motor doesn't need huge fuel pressure early in the revs. I learned this the hard way when I had a Kenne Bell on my other truck, WAAAY too much fuel on the bottom, black smoke. They used a standard FMU (same as the centrifugals use) to raise fuel pressure in relation to boost. The problem, a positive displacement blower, instant boost, instant and excessuve fuel pressure, and "not optimal" early RPM performance. Magnacharger then comes to the table with a CFR - "Compund Fuel Regulator", it raises the fuel pressure more progressively, nice piece! It's still a band-aid, but a good one. Holley did the right thing (chip-injectors), and Magnacharger will too eventually (when returnless fuel systems are implemented in the F-Series in 2003, along with EEC-6). My truck comes out of the hole MUCH harder, in fact early in the revs it has 25-30 more RWHP than the Superchips "custom" code. Crash, you are wrong to think that there is a Magnacharger program that works for everyone. When you order a custom chip, it's for YOUR truck, your EEC-5 code, and it's accessible via a password on the Superchips BBS (for Superchips Dealers). If you use a generic "custom" code, you're cheating yourself.
Take the time to talk to your chip dealer, so he can relay the info to Superchips and get you a program for YOUR truck. Chances are that now that a few of us have M'chargers, they already made a cutom program for your computer's catch code (mine is ATC2). Don't let them get lazy, unless the code was made for guy running in the SAME conditions, w/ the SAME mods, on the SAME truck (eng., code, etc.)
I get away with more timing (via MY chip) because I run at 4000-8000 feet elevation. The fuel trim strategy I wanted worked well also, FOR MY TRUCK. If I pinch a head gasket, I'll be the first to tell you guys. My truck has had the M'charger on it since it had 1500 miles on the odometer.
Crash, Superchips (Jay - the only guy to talk to if you can) made the program for me. Endorsing a code that isn't 50 state legal or CARB exempt would be silly, don't you think. Every custom code is understood to use at your own risk, that's why it's important, when you're greedy like me, to give them good info.
Coolsville, my truck is a 2000 5.4 4wd. It has the M'charger kit with a FIPK I fabbed up, and a chip...........that's it! You can see the intake charge temp on my numbers that Crash was nice enough to post again, 68 degrees. I see 5-6 pounds of boost depending on the weather. I can tell the other day when it was -5 the truck was seeing all of 7.5#'s of boost.....woo hoo! I live in "Frigid Snowy Hell" for 6 months a year, so 0-60 / 1/4 times are not something I keep track of. If I did have numbers, they would be misleading, damn altitude steals FREE HORSEPOWER.
Sorry for the long post.

Crash, I went through every one of my posts in the "Engine" section and removed any direct links to TPS, "Best Deal" plugs, or "Pricing" plugs (2-3 tops, my bad).
I believe that you "set up" Flats Man's truck right? Well it looks like his A/F ratio is at "stoic" for a few hundred RPM just like mine. The difference is that mine "ramps down" more progressively instead of a "super safe" blanket of fuel when the engine doesn't need it.
https://www.f150online.com/f150board...ML/003084.html
I attribute this to the way the dyno run was made, and the response time of the Dynojet A/F meter. The truck is trolling along nice and easy running 14.7 or so, and then the dyno operator wacks wide open throttle and the sample button at the same time. I can guarantee you that my numbers would be "different ie. richer" if I went WOT, waited a second and then hit the sample button (let things stabilize a bit). The Dynojet A/F meter is stuffed in the tailpipe, not in a boss near the factory 02 sensors (optimum). I run a real time wide bad A/F meter on my other 2 supercharged rigs (Mustangs), I welded a boss for the sensor up near the factory sensors. Also, keep in mind that on a Dynojet dyno, the A/F you see on the dyno won't be the same as what you see on the street (3300 # Mustangs are close). Just food for tought.
Oh yeah here is a quote, "I will NOT run a 14.6 A/F ratio at ANY load or RPM." I hope you mean under boost, because 95% of the time you truck is running at 14.5-14.9, otherwise you be refueling way too much. That's a waste of money, I know you'd rather buy more go fast parts!
Oh and another, I hope Superchips endorses their own product. The Magnachager codes are not 50 state legal or CARB exempt. Ask Superchips to warranty a custom program that causes detonation (Lightning guys can tell you about this with the R9 program) and pops your head gaskets....hmmmm.
Is my email OK, or do you want that to go as well? I just try to make everyone happy, and thanks for "not bottling up" on me, keep telling me how you feel!
Thanks Crash,

Crash!
Congrats on your new truck! I didn't know they were quite so rare. Did you mean only 5 produced, or available to purchase? I have a 4.6 5-speed, and I wouldnt have it any other way. I'm waiting to hear what kind of numbers you will be turning out with the Magnacharger, since I've got a similar set up. Hopefully I'll be a future proud owner of a rare blown 4.6 5-speed someday! Keep us posted.

Crash or White trash,
Could either of you send me copies of the dyno plots for a 4.6 (preferred manual tranny) stock. At this time I don't care what the supercharged numbers I only need the base line numbers. TIA

I'll turn Crash loose on your dyno request. Every dyno run I have access to is a 5.4 truck, not one of them are 4.6 (let alone a 5 spd). 5spd's are soooooo nice to dyno, you can get a full, stablized sweep of HP and Trq. The auto trucks are a bit of a pain, between the torque converter lock up routine and tapping the rev limiter in a 1:1 ratio (3rd gear) on the dyno, it kind of stinks!
Good luck, and Crash, congrats on the new truck.

Crash, looking forward to talking shop with you Thursday.
My question now is why didn't you go for a 5.4 / 5sp? Are they not manufactured? Just seems to make sense that they would make more H.P. Good luck on the new project truck!

Hello all, I really want to supercharge my wifes Expy, has anybody done it, and if so, what is the best price going?
I like the Magnacharger kits, not terribly impressed with what I have seen and heard of the Powerdyne setups though.
I have read about the Holley kits too, they sound very nice.
The only problem I have found is not a lot of price info to be found and when I do find it they are widely varied.
I thought I had read somewhere the MSRP on a Magnacharger for the 5.4 was around $3500 yet I found a few web sites with it listed as high as $3800 and $4300.
Looking for the best price going although I don't mind paying more if the service is there.
Thanks!

B777, check out the "Vendor Section" of the BBS. The last time I heard from Chris Weisberg at Magnacharger, he said they were honoring the old price of $3845 retail (for how long?). Crash mentioned that the price wasn't going up, but the Magnacharger site says "$4230".
Good luck!

Crash,
Thanks for the assist. I am looking for base #s so I can tell where my power will be when I switch to 4.10s. I wrote a program
That calculates Engine rpm in each gear according to tire size and tranny / differential gear ratio. How do you shift gears when you race? Do you power shift? I am having trouble keeping rear ends. The 8.8 in a 4x4 is too weak. Blew second one on the weekend. dealer is heming and hawing about fixing it under warranty...

Crash - what pod are you going with? I would stay away fromt the Autometer full pillar "cover" type pod. Lyle Simons at gaugepods.com has a very nice piece that replaces the stock trim (doesn't cover it like Autometer!). It comes color matched, it's cheaper than Autometer, is the "grain" matches much better. The Lightning guys are all over this set up, and I was one of the original guys to get one.
Highly recommended!!
