Question MINIMUM BRAKE PAD YHICKNESS?

My 1997 F150 4x4 has 48,000 miles on the original brakes. I want to inspect the front pads even though I have no problem. Are they marked to specify a minimum thickness? I don't want them to wear down to the rotors. I am very easy on brakes and may be able to go further before replacing. I just want to check at this point. Suggestions Appreciated.

Dewayne,

The Haynes manual says minimum disc brake pad thickness is 1/8". Help me out guys, but I could have sworn there's a channel cut in the pads that you should be able to see through the caliper's inspection hole. When the channel is no longer visible, it's time for new pads. (or maybe those are my aftermarket pads, I can't remember)

Gofish,

Thanks, I'll have a look this weekend.

gofish is right the stock pads have a groove down the middle of the pad and no "squealers"
to indicate when minimum thickness is reached. Replaced mine last weekend after 82,000 miles. Hard to believe, my 91 T-bird went through two sets of rotors and pads before 60,000. After Ford replaced them twice I went to Midas and they have gone 50,000 with no problems.

Don't mean to contradict you, PS398, but I found this thread:
https://www.f150online.com/f150board...ML/000423.html

and some guys there state that there are warning 'squealers' on the pads. I forget what year and model trucks, though. I couldn't remember mine--and none of my vehicles have Ford brake pads anymore so I can't check.

And how'd you get 81,000 out of a set of pads? On my TBirdSC and Mk8, neither car has ever gotten more than 45,000 miles--but the pads are PBR's--they stop on a dime, but wear out !Quickly!
