Meek47:

Suggest you do a search on this topic. Many posts have described this condition. Also Ford issued a TSB specificly addressing this issue.

Good Luck,

Wilk

Question Grabbin in the morning.

Hey, Every morning when i get in my truck to go to class, i back out of the parking spot at my apartment, then drive down the drive. When I hit the breaks they are tight, they grab and slide. A little. It took it into Ford yesterday when i was getting some belt work done. The service advisor said he had t he same problem. Is it just the metallic brakes, or is there someway to fix it. They told me to bring the truck back when it wasn't raining outside, then they could accurately check them. Any body know anything about this break problem? A little info would be great. Thanks, Meek

Mine does it in the morning, after we have had some rain or super wet dew. I asked about the TSB at my dealer and he told me it was too late, and that the best thing I could do is replace the rears, completely. I have learned to deal with it until I can do this.

My 98 did this when it was new. A local dealer replaced the shoe's with a different set. There should be a TSB on this. My 89 and 93 F-150's did this when they were new too. This is NOT a new problem for Ford. Go fight with the SOB and get him to do his job.

Good luck

meek47, I was talking with the Assistant Chief of my department today who stated he was having the same problem with his brand new Durango. This is a fire department vehicle and get driven SUPER hard. He told me the way to stop it is, put your parking brake on when you park for the night. HE told me he does this every night and doesn't have a problem. I'm going to try it too.

Angry

There have been numerous complaints just like this. They'll also grab and jerk if you are on ice or a wet street. I solved the problem by putting a heavy grade dab of axle grease where the metal of the pad rubs the plate. I also greased the channel that the tension spring cable runs. This was after paying the dealer $150.00 to fix it. Of course they didn't correct the problem, but the axle grease did.

Thumbs up

Just a follow up...
The weather has warmed up (65° and sunny outside today), and it dried out around here (Auburn, Alabama) So I am not having anymore problems with it. It works, just like it did before the cold damp weather. But if we get one of those good ole southern cold fronts again, i might try these things. Thanks, Meek

This is a common problem for all metallic brakes. Ford is no exception. Rotors corrode (rust) as well as the metallic material in the pad compound. In a damp/moist warm environment the condition is most prevelent. Pad manufactures are constantly changing the pad compound to find the ideal mix. Functionality vs. acceptable pad wear. High performance braking systems are more subseptible to this then other application. I have changed rotors on corvettes to aftermarket stainless to make the owners happy. Composite pads eliminate this condition but are expensive and have other drawbacks (i.e. poor performance when cold). The gentlemen that posted that his co-worker set the parking brake reduced the occurance made a valid point. By setting the pads against the rotor the atmosphere was not allowed to enter and thus reducing the corrosion.
