Question 16x10 rims - help please!!

I am wanting to put 16x10 rims on my stock height '01 f150 4x4. What is the largest tire I can put on there, without torquing the t-bars? I have been doing a lot of research, and from what I gather, 305/70's won't work without modification. Will 285/75's fit on a 10" rim? and if so, any rubbing? I really want the 16x10 wheels because sometime in the near future, I plan on doing a liftkit and that wheel would be perfect for some Super Swampers. Any suggestions out there? By chance, any pics?

285s are too narrow a tire to put on a 10" wheel. Some people have done it, but its not really healthy for the tires. With 305/70/16s you should be ok and not really rub. If you do it will be VERY slightly. Also if need be you could crank your torsion bars SLIGHTLY to the point where it would fix the problem, yet you wouldn't notice a difference at all in ride quality.

Like Powerstroke said, 16x10's are larger than what is recommended for a 285/75. BFG recommends a maximum rim width of 9 inches for their 285's. That being said, I am running BFG 285's on 16x10's and not having any problems in a little of 14,000 miles. I chose 285's because BFG did not have a 305/70 at the time I purchased tires and I just had to have BFG AT KO's. I looked at BFG's recommended rim sizes and noticed that a 10 inch wide rim was approved for a 32x11.50-15 which is almost identical in width to a 285/75-16 and figured that it would not be that big a deal. I also knew a couple of guys who had been running 285's on 16x10's without any problems for over a year. One on a 99 Z-71 extended cab, the other on a 98 F-150 Supercab. If you plan on doing any wheeling in rocky areas, I wouldn't even consider the 285's. Also, to answer your question, you will still have to trim the front bumper's lower plastic valance to fit 285's on a 16x10. I had to trim about 1/2 inch off. With 305's on 16x10's you will probably have to trim about an inch off.

The reason behind BFGs reccommendation on wheel sizes between 32/11.5/15 and 285/75/16 I suspect is this. The higher profile of the sidewall for the 15s allows more flex to allow the 10" wheels to fit better.

Thanks for the input. One question for Wandell; Did you have those tires and wheels on before you put the boby lift on?

What size tire are you going to go to eventually? I guess I want to know how wide will you be going?

Yeah, I ran the 285's on 16x10's before I installed the body lift. I had to trim about 1/2 inch of plastic off the front bumper's lower plastic valance.

I will most likely do 285/75's. I would like to do 305/70's or a 33, but I am not sure they will fit. Trimming the valance is not a big deal, however, by torquing the t-bars, you'll effect the ride quality. I drive on the highway quite a bit, and I love how my truck rides now. I really don't want to tamper with it unless its a last resorst. So, to answer your question: If I can find out that 305's will definitly fit w/o torquing the t-bars, that's what I'm buying - if not - than 285's

The 305's are only an inch wider than 285's. So since I trimmed about 1/2 inch, I would think you would only have to trim about 1 inch to fit 305's. I know they will fit because I have seen some trucks on FTW that are running that combo.i

I have a 4X2 and am going to go to 35X12.5X16(8" wide rim) tires and have a 3" spindle lift on the front end and with some trimming I can do it so I don't know why with 33's why you would need to do trimming with a 4X4. I think that I am going to just get some fiberglass fenders($400) that flare out a little and the wheel wells are a little bit bigger. If you plan on off-raoding(consdering you have a 4X4 I would hope you would) I would recommend that you run an 8" wide rim though. The smaller rim will help your tires protect your rim better and it looks nice with the bulge in the sidewall, IMO. In case you are wondering, no, it would not be a problem to run a 12.5 wide tire on a 8" wide rim.

Thanks wandell !!! I'm sure you are right. I was thinking the same thing. I was doubting myself because I spoke to a major retailer and one other person on the board both saying they wouldn't fit. (It just goes to show the quality of help, or lack there of, at the major tire retailers). I recently contacted a local guru and he just assured me they would fit too. I appricate the help. I am purchasing my wheels/tires off the net and I hate to be stuck with them because they don't fit. Thanks again.

That'll look sweet with those mods. Post some pics after you get it done.
I think I am going to stick w/ the 16x10 rim though. I plan on lifting in the near future and slapping some super swampers on after that. I haven't determined lift height and tires yet, but it will be awhile before I can save up the $$. I just do not like my factory wheels and tires so I thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and get the wheels now and slap a decent tire on it. thanks for the input though.

billybob150, just another voice of confidence to make you feel better...Yes, the 305/70 & 16X10 combo will fit very nicely, with minor trimming. I'm not sure I understand why you're so adamant about not cranking the torsion bars??? It is really not that big of a deal and I never noticed a change in ride quality. Even if there was, it's worth it for the looks, IMO.

Nice truck! Those guages kicka$$! Were they custom? Those would look great in mine.

Its not that I am against cranking the t-bars, its really not that big of a deal. I'm just not sure how it will effect the ride quality. If its not that much, then heck yeah. I really like that stance of your truck. I would like a similar look to mine.

Off the topic....I am having trouble posting a signature (you know, specs, links and stuff) for my posts. How do you go about putting them on there? Sorry, this is the first time I have used a message board.
