Brake smell/rim very warm . . .

Okay here is one for you,

I've noticed that when my brakes get warm, they will squeak quite a bit and sound "coarse". I took it in to a local shop to get looked at and they said they cleaned them and re-adjusted everything (rear drums). They also said there was lots of material left on the brakes. Sounded like there was lots of brake dust and stuff inside the drums.

When I came home, I could smell something burning. I poked around a little and it seems to be coming from the driver side rear drum area. Also, the rim and drum was VERY hot to the touch . . . much hotter than the passenger side. There was no noticeable smell from the passenger side.

I took it out for a spin to see if I noticed it performing any differently and it didn't seem to pull or anything like that. However, when I pulled over to check out the rear driver side drum, the rim was quite warm and the drum was HOT. This was after barely using the brakes. I suspect the brake is sticking and causing the burning smell. Is this a reasonable conclusion?

I had intended on taking my truck to go fishing in the next few days, but it looks like those plans are on hold ultil I can get it into the dealer for a look

Can you think of anything else it could be? After I cam home, the passenger side drum was warm (as I expected to to be from regular braking) and the rim wasn't uncomfortable to touch. The drivers side drum was again HOT and smelly. I didn't notice the smell until after they were cleaned today. Is it a coincidence that it just started after I took it in? The noise they are making is the same.

Thanks for any info or experience you can throw my way.

when they cleaned them and put them back on they obviosly adjusted them out to far..you can lift that side and try to remove the drum and if it doesnt want to come off this may be the case....push in a small screwdriver to push the adjuster arm away then take your adjusting tool and turn the 'star wheel' downward until you loosen it enough to remove the drum..at this point I would take a look for yourself as to what your brake looks like..put the drum back on if it looks fine(all though it may be well overheated and will need attention ) and the wheel and adjust out untill youn can hear the brake pads rubing but not so much as to prevent the wheel from turning..if you have them replaced insist that the hadware be replaced due to thier being weakened by the heat cycling that accures ..if all else is fine you should check the emergancy brake the cable may be stuck..good luck

Also make sure that your parking brake cable isn't seized. That happened to mine and I also toasted a set of rear brakes.

Thanks for the responses guys. It's going into the shop tommorrow (it was due for a service anyway) and I'm getting them to have a look at it.

I'll give an update when I hear back.

Well the rear drum has been repaired. It appears as though when I had them checked out and adjusted a few days earlier (different shop), they adjusted them so that they were too tight. The left rear drum was damaged from the heat and it was replaced . . . I guess the shoes were glazed over pretty well also.

They did a complete inspection of the other side and the fronts and all appears well now.

I can finally go fishing
