Drum Brakes shudder when coming to stop

I have a 98 F150, 4x2, longbed, regular cab. I bought it with 31K miles on it. When I braked back then, the front rotors felt warped and the bed hopped when slowing down. So now the truck has 40K miles and I had all the brakes done. New rotors, drums, pads, etc. The front brakes no longer feel warped. But now, instead of a hopping from the rear when braking at slower speeds, I get a shudder upon moderate braking when the truck decels from 20 to 5MPH. I bought another new set of quality drums, put them on, and still get the same shudder effect (thinking the new drums were warped).

Any ideas from those with late model F150s with rear drums?

I am glad you asked this question because I have the same problem. I have a 98 F150 4x4 and it has 63k on it. My truck began to shudder six months to one year ago, so I replaced the front pads and rotors, but not the back drums. Before I replaced anything, Ford told me the shuddering was due to warped rotors on the front and bad drums on the back. I replaced the rotors, and I still have shuddering (so I know it's the drums). I was hoping when I changed the drums, the shuddering would stop, but by your post, it may not. Hope we find a solution!

Question Shudder upon braking

Hey folks, how do you determine if your truck has a 2 or 4 wheel ABS? I have a '98 F-150 Extended, Flareside, XLT, 4.6L, auto trans. I have discs on the front, and drums at the rear. The truck has 100,250 aprox. miles. No real problems other than the minor door cracks, and replaced the master cylinder around 45k miles. I had the rotors turned, and new pads installed as well. Any clues to determine 2 or 4 wheel ABS? I need to know in order to buy the right brake parts. Thanks.

Cool

I've had that same rear end bounce, and it was solved with new shoes and cut drums. I never had a problem after that with them.
I don't think 4 wheel was available in 98, only rear ABS. For some reason my front brakes lock up sometimes. It's not a fun feeling, especially when towing a 4500 pound vehicle on a trailer behind you. I could be wrong, but I believe 4 wheel ABS came in 99 with the four wheel discs.,,,,98

I only have rear ABS on mine....

Okay, I think I remember better now. The 2 wheel ABS was standard, and four wheel was optional (more money),,,,98

In 99 it became standard 4 wheel ABS?

even new drums straight out of the box need to be turned sometimes. i had the same problem, put new drums on from napa, and the problem didn't go away. had the new drums turned and the problem went away. front disc will also cause the same problem. there is alot of bad metal being used in disc these days. its not uncommon to have a set of rotors turned, only to have them warp again int 5000 miles or so.

97 Lariats have 4 wheel ABS. I'd bet it was an option for the rest of the line too.

Mine is rear ABS only.I would imagine it was still kind of rare then to have 4 wheel. Unless it was a lariat of course.,,,,98
