Best tire best size for 17" rims
I'm sure this has never been asked before......
I'm a newbie when it comes to my truck and I was wondering what's the biggest tire I can safely put on my stock 17" rims. I'm not looking to get new rims nor am I looking to get 4 balloons at the corners. I've been looking at prices for different tires and some of them have better deals on the larger than stock sizes.
I have the stock 265/70 R 17 Goodyear Wrangler RT/S and I'd like to move up to a 285 or maybe bigger if possible. I saw a deal on tirerack.com for the 315/70R17 BFG T/A KO's for $119 ea while the 265/70QR17 is $161 and the 285/70QR17 is $185. Discount Tire Direct has the 265/70R17 for $194 ea
I can get the stock replacements for about $111 ea it looks like.
So my questions are:
1. How big of a tire can I fit on my stock 17" rims?
2. Where can I find the best prices on tires for my truck?

There are a few members at www.fordtruckworld.com who have put the 315/70-17 BFG's on there stock 4x4's. They fit them by using the stock 17x7.5 inch rims, cranking up the torsion bars and trimming the front bumper's lower plastic valance. This is a large tire, basically a 35x12.50-17, and it is a very tight fit. If you don't want to go this big, you should be able to fit a 285/70-17 (33x11.50), a 33x12.50-17 or a 305/70-17 (34x12.50) without any problem on your stock rims.
