What size tire can I get away with? Recommendations?
Hey, I'm usually a Mustang guy, but my "tow vehicle" needs new tires. I have an ext cab FX4. The stock tire size is 265/70/17. I have seen a few trucks rolling around that have tires that seem to be good on the road (main priority) yet have the appearance/function of some good offroading. I don't want a tire that makes the nasty whine while driving, cause I commute 20mi on the highway each way every day.
What brand/style tire and size can I put on there that gives my truck a good off road look but still has great driveability?

You can go up to 275/70r17 or 285/70R17 without any problems. Selection is small, but I can recommend Goodyear Wrangler ATS and BFG All Terrain KO. If you want to stick to stock size, I recomemnd the Bridgestone Dueal AT Revo. Looks sweet, quiet, and performs very well. Check out www.tirerack.com for customer reviews.

If you use the stock 17x7.5 inch FX4 rims, you can fit up to a 315/70-17 (35x12.50-17). You will have to crank up your torsion bars or trim the front bumper's lower plastic valance, but they will fit. BFG makes the AT KO in this size and you can usually find better prices on 315's than the smaller sizes. This may be because it is the OEM tire on the Hummer H2. You can also fit a 285/70-17 (33x11.50), 305/70-17 (34x12.50) or 33x12.50-17. If you want good road manners and aggressive looks, the BFG AT KO is hard to beat. The Nitto Terra Grapplers, Bridgestone Dueler AT (and AT REVO), Goodyear Wrangler ATS and Mickey Thompson Baja Radial MTX are also good choices. Your stock tires are 265/70-17 (32x10.50) and look OK on the truck but a 285 or larger would look much better.

Hey, I found a pic of a stock FX4 Screw with 315/70-17 (35x12.50) BFG AT KO's on factory 17x7.5 inch rims.

I want your truck, dude! How much was the wheel/tire combo? I have the same thing, but DSG and fleetside.

My wheels and tires cost me about $1625 to my door (minus mounting, balancing, etc...) I got the tires off Tirerack.com for $125 tire (bought 5) and got the wheels off of Ebay for $850. I think those are both great deals (of course I bought them so I would!) considering 4Wheel Parts tried to sell me some Procomp AT's for like $220/tire and those same wheels for over $300/wheel. Don't try to fit them on a stock FX4 though...I still get a little rub on the front bumper at full lock!
Good luck with whatever you decide -

Here is my 2000 with 305/70/17 GY MT/R's. They look awesome and fit just great. I never had to crank the torsion bars and I do not experience any rubbing. My gallery has more photos.
I was surprised how quiet the MT/R's actually are. Of course they make a bit more noise than an AT, but you can't come close to the looks of these MT's with an AT.
Just my opinion.
